Folks, I was poking around under the bonnet and found a split in the big hose that runs from the air filter to the throttle body. I'm quite pleased since this might explain the wobbly idle and poor starting the car has had for a while!
I'm guessing that anything from a breaker would be a bit "vintage" by now, so could someone tell me the right part number and approximate cost if I order from a dealer?
And the next bit, how hard is it to change this thing without knackering one of the other hoses in that area? If there's any other bits I should change at the same time that'd be useful to know too...

IF it's for a 2.5 with a T shaped ICV and no extra vacuum pipes i have a brand new un-used one you can have.

DUh, I'm stupid, sorry.

It an E reg facelift 2.5 M20, totally standard.
Datourer, thanks for the offer! I'll have to check what the ICV looks like, although there did seem to be a lot of hoses in there, I've no idea if any of them were extras or not. I'll get the GF to charge her camera up (its a tough job!) and post a pic.

BTW, I'm assuming that this will make the car run lean which is bad. I tried a bodge up with self-amalgamating tape but it didn't do much good so the car is parked until I get it fixed. Is this a good idea or over the top?

Thanks folks

Ofcourse it's better to leave it sitting until you get it fixed, but it might be a bit over the top, there are thousands of E30s driving around with vacuum leaks without too much trouble.

Unless you have a huge leak, remember that it only affects idle and the very low revs, at speeds the engine is sucking in so much air that the leak becomes insignificant compared to the total amount of air entering the intake. So just keep moving 8)

From what I recall, it wasn't that expensive, but I can look it up for you (Msrp in Euro) if you have the year of the car too (I'm not from the UK so all those X-reg plate mumbo jumbo means nothing to me :)).

this part costs about £12 at the dealers, if you quote them your reg number when ordering this will ensure you get the correct part

The part number for an M20 up to nov 1988 is 13711708800 apparently. Do you have the vin number handy? then it would be easier to get the right part (unless of course your car has had an undisclosed engine swap in its life)

My other halfs E-reg is a nightmare to find parts for, its some sort of hybrid! I think bmw just used up what was lying around the factory.

bit of useless information is L shaped ICV looks like:

T shaped looks like:

No, not useless at all - all information gratefully received! I should probably give that bit a good clean when I'm replacing the hose...
Now I'm going to have to work out what other changes were made when. This sort of thing excites my inner ainspotter ;)

BIngo! and there it was - invisible until you take it off! (silly Germans!)
Just as well too, the underneath was all mangled where someone got the clip on wrong when it was installed. I don't think this car has been breathing right since this one went on :( There was also some engine oil in there which seems a bit odd, it has been leaking out of the bottom of the pipe (where the mangled bit didn't make a proper seal) down the side of the block. Any idea if this is normal?
cheers,

Oil gets in the pipe from the cam cover breather. Don't worry about it if it's not excessive.
Unless you're absolutely sure about the part no. , let the dealer order it from the VIN. That way it's there fault if it's wrong.
While you're there, that looks like the original coolant cap, which should have been changed years ago as part of a safety recall. Take it with you, and they will tell you if its been replaced from the VIN. If not they should swap yours for a nice new (safe) one.

And its fixed :) £14.41 inc VAT for the part and a 2 year warrantee on it. :)

Thanks folks for the info, you just saved me a trip to the garage - although I'm pretty sure that the mechanics children won't starve just yet, I enjoyed fixing that myself. Next up: fixing the speedo cable!

Brian, I checked with the dealer and there are no recalls outstanding on my VIN. They did offer to sell me a new coolant cap which I'll do if you reckon the original is a danger?

Cheers all

Glad you got it sorted, although a tip on the speedo' cable replacement, there isn't one! The speedo' is electronic and gets it's signal from the diff' (i think :? ). If the speedo' isn't working it's probably a knackered wire on the diff' :thumb:

As datourer says, the speedo is probably a wire at the diff. The copper wires break inside their PVC sheath, so it's not obvious.
Gently pull the individual wires from the back of the diff plug, and see if one stretches. The break usually occurs within about three inches of the plug.
If that's an original cap, I would change it. The fault is that the pressure relief valve can sometimes jam shut, causing the cooling system to over pressurise> This blows water out from various places like the radiator end caps, the heater valve or blows a hose. I'm convinced I lost an engine to this a few years ago, and a month or so ago I had a heater valve blow apart while I was working on a car.

Yep, I've been reading up on the speedo wire (not cable then!) thanks folks - always good to have it confirmed :)

I'll order another coolant cap then, I've no idea if its original and nor did the parts guy at BMW when I showed it to him. I'll post a pic tommorow if you don't mind checking it out.....

Thanks yet again :)

Coolant cap ordered just to be safe after we started overheating in traffic due to viscous coupling failure.
£10.11 inc vat and delivery to work.
Job done :)
