Following a coversation with a mate of mine this avo, we have come up with a question...
Which gearboxes mate to the BMW V12? winkeye
And is the V12 used at the moment, used in the Maclaren F1, and X5 V12 the same engine (in essence) as the one in the 88 ish 750i?

The reason for this question is that my mate is a landrover nut, and we have a silly idea to put a V12 in a 110  but want to keep the 4x4 or else it's pointless. I don't fancy mating the V12 to the Landie box, and I think the box would break anyway, and it'd feel way too agricultural. So it got me thinking, does the X5 box and transfer bolt on to the V12, as in the X5 Le Mans V12 proto thingie. Anyway ramblings of a frustrated engineer!
won't be doing the project for ages as I'm shipping out but it'd be interesting to see if anyone (Dips Glenn) have any views.

Obviously the 850 manual fits but they are rare as hens teeth, but if any of the others ftted I suppose the V12 conversion guys would all be going manual.

Also do you thing the old Landie Diffs and 1/2 shafts would be up to it. Or am I going to have to find some Mustang items

Heres some photos to keep you interested, and as a reward for reading all that :D

Thought the F1 engine used heads developed from the M3 engine or something like that, and that the curent V12 was also a 48valver!

Yeah they are both completely different engines, but what I'm getting at is the block and therefore the grabox stud pattern the same???
Or does the new V12 share the gearbox mounting pattern with all the other geaarboxes in the range?

No, not even slightly. I can't remember the exact reasons and differences, but thre are very few, if any, shared parts between the F1's engine and the 7/850. The X5LM is a completely different engine.

The maclaren F1 engine is the same as the 850 CSI which is a S** BMW motorsport engine and the normal 850/750 is a M** engine which is different. No idea about what the X5 uses. The 850 Csi engines are pretty rare only a few hundread in world i belive

Hi

The macf1 engines & 850 csi are totaly different, 48v v 24v different drive sytems for the heads, cranks, pistons, combstion chamber shapes. Just because you can put an s14 head on an m10 that does not make them the same engine.

The current v12 use a differnt bore spacign to the orginal v12's. If you have the skill to fit the v12 the adapting the gearbox from an x5 should be a possibilty. It will probably be the closet box to adapt.

Just someone on e30tech that bought one chatting shit trying to make it sound good then, didnt think it was likely but dont know anything about how F1 is tuned, 850 CSI makes nowhere near as much power, never seen any of them myself. Dont really see any point in them anyway when you can make way more power then you ever want on a straight 6
