On the way to the Falkirk cruise last night, I kept on hearing a "click-click-click" sound from the rear end of the touring..

It didnt seem to be speed related (stayed at almost same rate regardless of speed) however It seemed to dissapear below 60ish.

Both my brother and james (hammoj28) said that they could hear the ticking whilst in their cars, so I think its something drivetrain related.

any ideas?

I would back that one up Neil

After putting new rear pads and handbrake shoes in my car last year i drove away and instantly had a clicking going on, on pulling the handbrake up a click it went. It turned out that the locking wheel nut on each wheel has a slightly longer thread, which was protruding into the hub and catching the edge of the shoe.

This also explained the cowboy adjustment on the handbrake lever adjustments to compensate, so when my old man set everything level under the lever and adjusted at the caliper as you're supposed to, it caused this to happen.

Solved it by grinding a few mm off the end of the locking nut. Job jobbed.

thanks lads! thing is, handbreak seems fine-holding well!

also would that be loud enough to be heard outside the car when car is doing 70ish (+or- 30  )?

If it's the sprung tab which holds the shoe to the back plate, the rest of the mechanism will work well enough to hold the brake on.

And yes, this would be loud enough. Last time it happened to one of my cars I was following it at 60 and noticed the noise.

agree with chris

deffo loud enough

both springs came off on mine and lodged in the shoe mechanisms
but handbrake still worked spot on cos there isnt much space for the shoes to move far but just enough to cause a racket

but of course we could all be wrong lol
