how does the speedo work

my speedo on my 320 e30 does not work.does any one know where the sensor is e.g wheel,diff,prop.any info will be a great help thanks.

The sensor is in the diff look under the back of the car and you will see it.

And the problem is most likely an internal break in one of the wires within about three inches of the plug.
Gently pull the individual wires. If one stretches, it is broken.
