Just bought a 318i with the M40 engine with an overheating problem as a project car. I thought it was most likely the water pump but found that the heater matrix had been bypassed. Can anyone tell me what effect if any this has on the cooling system please?

it shouldn't have any real effect on the cooling system as such. if the two pipes are just linked and you can be sure there is no airlock now in the system, and you still have over heating problems u will have to look else where. is your rad gettin hot all over or is there cold spots. it could be the water pump or thermostat, or the viscous fan either, or then again u might have head, head gastket or a knackered engine on your hands

Bypassing or blanking off the heater pipes shouldn't cause overheating.
First of all, is it realy overheating, or does the gauge just say that it is?
Thermostats fail on M40s.
