It's got BBS wheels at least. Most 316s had steels or bottlecaps at best, so that's a few pounds you won't need to spend.

Welcome mate - no need for the embaressment, its a nice car as it is :D

I think you have the right idea, get everything back to 100%, drive the car for a while then make decisions as to where you think it needs improvement

thanks for the welcome, people.

it needs a few things to get her working sweet, so hopefully this is the right place to come. a few things like the rust under the wheel arches needs stopping before they get worse and the gear box feels a bit clunky and a good tune wouldnt go amiss.

anyone know general prices on a standard tune and service on the engine.

clear out any mnor problems..things like that...tappets sound like they need doing as well

thatnks for the input anyways

M40 engine was BMWs first attempt at hydraulic tappets, and they didn't make too good a job of it, I'm afraid
Any that are still silent after about 60k miles are a rarity.
Doesn't sound too good ,but is harmless.

anything that can be done with those noisy buggers?

heard it was a relativly easy job to sort the tappets.

as for mods im not sure so far, all a bit new to me so any suggestions are welcome

induction kit for a start...just to get everything running as it should

gearbox could be replaced

how much for a tune up, generally?

Easy enough to cure the tappets - just replace them. Not cheap though.
All an induction kit will do for your car is make sucking noises and possibly reduce power.
Standard 316 air filter is the same as the 325, and it's quite adequate for the 2.5, so has plenty to spare for a 1.6.

right now all i want to do is get it running well first.

nothing wrong with it now but i know a tune up will help

basically ive just got it for next to nothing but im starting off with not much of a clue whats wrong or right about it so i just want it checked over and go from there really

and its 1.8i and not a 1.6 , but if you lot are saying an induction kit wont actually make a differance then i'll just have a standard filter in there

'91 318i is a M40 engine.
Confusing your car with one from another post. Looking back at the OP I see it is indeed a 1.8.
Same engine as the 1.6 though, excepr for 200cc.

Alrite Sicknote!!

Welcome to the zone mate!! Your cars looks a lot like mine when i first got it - A Good Start!!

I have a 87 3.20i 4 door. I started by upgrading little extras like steering wheel to mtech - fogs - clear indicators - electric arial - maplight rear view - a good service but i cant remember what i paid. I had other minor little thing going on like indicator stalk not working etc. Before the zone i was getting all my parts off ebay but in my recent experience these guys will sort you out plus give you advice.

Next for me will be the rims and suspension...Im heading for alpinas with a 40mm drop... im sure thats enough to get your imagination going... Enjoy the zone mate!!!

Jason

ps. Get better soon :teehee:

wouldnt bother with the induction kit mate less your getting an fully enclosed one as said they can lose you power. I'd just get the bits and bobs sorted on the car first before doing anything else. Later on if you wanted if you want to sort the styling, an Mtech kit would be the way forward. Good luck with it dude! :rasta:

welcome mate, your in the best place for any help and info you might need once youve decided on which route your going down with your car, theres a good mix of purists and modders here,so remember you cant please all the people all of the time, just dont take some of the comments to heart 8)
