If i give the dealer my chassis number will they be able to tell me the reg of the car ??
The car i have just aquired has had various private plates on it and i have no idea what the original number is.
They should be able to tell me what it was when it left the dealership ?
Dealers & Chassis Number ?

hmmmmmmmm, you bought a car without a plate...
The dealer should be able to give you the original plate number, but this will be of no use if it is not registered with the DVLA anymore!
Ring the DVLA on:-
Vehicle Enquiries: 0870 240 0010

Why do you want to know the original reg? DVLA possibly have it in their records, bur the original number is of no relevance now.
When a private plate is transferred the donor vehicle is issued with an age related new plate, unless their are reasons, such as etched windows , to re issue the original.
Only number the dealer will be interested in is the last seven digits of the VIN.

uh oh, its a ringer!!!
if you give the dealer your chassis number, it will come with the last reg that your car had on it when it last visited a BMW dealership
if you want PM your chassis number and i'll have a look for you at work in the next few days, but i cant promise it'll be successful...
i work for a dealership by the way, i dont just wanna go round copying your VIN number!!! all i need is the last seven digits, which should be 2 letters and 5 numbers

If the car was registered on an H plate (1990) how has it gotten an L plate ??, you can't have a younger reg letter than the carm-dtech wrote:lol,

dude - its a private plate, it could start with A if he wanted it to, bears no relationship to the age/birth of the carIf the car was registered on an H plate (1990) how has it gotten an L plate ??, you can't have a younger reg letter than the car

private plates still have to abide by the rules, you cannot put a plate on a car with a registation suffix that makes the car appear newer than it is.
He could put an A only if the car is newer than an A plate. hence why you cannot put a 06 or 56 on your E30 even if it is a private plate.

From what I understand mrlee, if the plate doesn't comform to the regulations with regard to the amount of characters on the plate (1 letter, 3 numbers, 3 letters), it is permissable to use a prefix which would normally indicate the age of the car.

not strictly specified though, does say on DVLA that you cannot use it to make you car look younger but if it is clear it does not relate the the age (like having E30 MS when my car is a G reg) you could have it....(he says hoping not to be wrong again!)

But thats making your G reg car look like an E reg, which is allowed.iDreamBeemer wrote:not strictly specified though, does say on DVLA that you cannot use it to make you car look younger but if it is clear it does not relate the the age (like having E30 MS when my car is a G reg) you could have it....(he says hoping not to be wrong again!)
Putting M3 BMW (for example) on a G reg M3 is not allowed because that makes the car look like an M reg car.
The car left the dealer on an H plate which was a private plate. The car could be an L reg ('93/'94) and the owner had the private H plate put on when he bought it from the dealer.Templ8e30 wrote:If the car was registered on an H plate (1990) how has it gotten an L plate ??, you can't have a younger reg letter than the carm-dtech wrote:lol,

I've had it work both ways.Brianmoooore wrote:When a private plate is transferred the donor vehicle is issued with an age related new plate, unless their are reasons, such as etched windows , to re issue the original.
15 years ago when I transferred my plate from my Cortina to a Belmont, the Cortina was given a perviously unused plate with the correct suffix.
When I transferred the plate from my RS onto the Touring, the original plate for the RS was re-used. I didn't request it and could find no reason for the re-issue. When I got the V5 back, it had on it "this registration mark is non-transferrable" or something similar.
I'm assuming that if m-dtech's E30 has had an "L" plate on at some time in its life it's a very late model 316i or 318i Touring.
