325 on a student wage is that possible?

Nah seriously mate,if you want one go and get one!
Worry about the fuel cost when you come to it.

I really want one,and dont care about fuel cost(her indoors does though,BADLY)but just cant do it right now, later in the year maybe!

Decisions decisions...............good luck whatever :D

student wage my arse ;) i have things on the side winkeye

but yeah would drain a fair bit,,i dunno

think i might just keep the car, make it as i intended, then eventually get the 2.7 in, though apparently according to, ( dont remember but in Total bmw some time back) it was a mission ofa job?? though ive heard it shouldnt have been???

Ali, keep the is, get that looking how you want it and in the mean time build a decent 2.7 and drop that in.
your is will be a better long term project rust wise at least which is half the battle.
Thats what i am thinking anyway when i one day have to part with my tech 1

The gate has opened to ponderous turn in understeer you mean!?...

I had a 325i and was going to buy another but after driving a couple of 318is went for one of them instead - much more chuckable and fun screaming the tits off it (as I'm sure you know) as opposed to the more flat powerbandless power delivery of the 325i

<flame suit on> :P

However I guess I have that kinda racetrack mentality to my driving

For 95% of people a 325i will be the better car - more relaxed with all the extra torque, and thay still handle alright

The 318is is for driving enthusiasts, cause you have to work to get the speed from it.
Cheers,
Robin

Not really that much quicker, and yes the 6pot sounds great, but you cant really hear it - too much effin soundproofing in bimmers, and if you have the windows down theres too much wind noise

Hmm, i dunno. 325i is definately faster but id like to build a 318is that beats a 325i!

Yes as I said a 325i is faster, but not a huge amount, due to the lower weight and shorter gearing of the 318is
You'll notice the difference when pulling away, but once the revs are up on the iS theres no real difference at all, and if anything the iS will have a slight advantage down a twisty backroad due to its superior handling

Eg in my 325i a couple of us wringing its neck didnt manage better than a 9m20 BTG at the ring (though I'm quite sure it can go round there quicker in the right hands)
I know someone that does sub 9min BTG in a 318is...

You just have to remember power isnt everything, look at eg. a lotus elise

And yes it'd be nice to have a 318is that's quicker than a 325i but for me you might as well just spend the money on a 325i with a 2.7 if all you want is power.
Cheers,
Robin

Fully agree. I have a 318iS amongst the fleet, and it is the most fun car, rowing it along on the gearbox and chucking it at the scenery.
I know it's not, but with the engine screaming away it FEELS as fast as any 325.
