I noticed yesterday that my heater only blows hot if turned right up to full, despite the temp' guage sitting in the normal position. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Turn the heater 1/4 of the way from cold to hot and see if the heater water pipes are getting hot. If thety are, suspect that the heater cable has slipped.

You can check the pipes under the bonnet, where they join to the heater on the bulkhead.
Cable runs from the heater control to the flap lever, which is just behind the back of the driver's footwell heater outlet. If you remove the panel above the driver's knees you should just about be able to see it.
