Was changing the diff on a mates 318iS today - I finally got him to get an LSD winkeye

Anyway, was undoing the prop nuts (or atleast trying) and a I broke my spanner :( I also broke 3 fingers when the spanner gave way

I was putting so much effort in, when the spanner broke I basically punched the bottom of the car with the spanner inside my fist 8O

So, 10mins jacking the car up, 5mins under the car, 4hrs in casualty having 2 of the 3 fingers put back straight

Diff removal pain rating - 10/10

Drugged up pretty good at the moment, so they aint too bad. I can still feel them throbbing and they have really swollen up.

I was looking forward to getting the touring sorted this weekend as well.

if i know its tight i use a mallet to ease it off....if the mallet enables it to give way then i know its safe for me. :)

other then that my worst injuries so far is mainly skin off knuckles and fingers!

At the end of each day i count how many fingers i still have, if it adds up to 10 then it's been a good day.

In the last 18 months I've broken a little finger (shut in van sliding door...)

Drilled through my thumb...

and at the moment I'm slowly watching my middle finger nail turn various shades of black ready to drop off

And i trapped a nerve in my back a few weeks ago, i fell into a skip and had to be helped out, took 20 minutes for me to be helped out of the skip before i was able to shuffle forward an inch at a time....

Be careful out there, it's a dangerous world

i knocked myself out when i broke a big breaker bar once.

lesson is invest in good tools and your fingers and skull will thank you.

i use a pole over the spanner sometimes that way u get heaps more torque and there is less effort required so if u slip or it breaks u dont get hurt.

I pulled a steering wheel off once and managed to smack myself in the face with it...

lesson learned there, always leave a couple of threads on the nut when trying to dislodge a steering wheel!!

I've always used a braeker bar and lever'd the spanner against the bottom of the car to get the bolts loose, usualy digs in the underseal a bit but it's a lot less painful. I still managed to drop the diff off the jack though :duck:

Have you got an oxygen tent

broken many tools in my time including halfords big breaker bars.... they take some abuse though.

i usually gauge how much force i am putting through a spanner then its a choice between a braeker bar/socket or hook another spanner onto the proper 1 winkeye .

never broken any bones but never have a cut free set of knuckles and occasionally have a case of 'spanner rash' on my head/face where somthings slipped off/broken and i have cut myself.

and i still love my job

disconnecting the interior light from a scrappers headlining.. pulled the wire off the contact and slice.. into the other contact.. complete with grease and gunk from changing windows and throttle cable.. IT HURT like hell and still looks gammy today!

yeah but you use the jack to raise it slightly to make the bolts come out easier.
Well, thats my excuse and i'm sticking to it

done that before, several times!!!

i put my steering rack and LSD in this morning...

the rack was ok, except locating the steering UJ back onto the rack! that was c*nt!!

but the diff... oh, that was a different story!! I got loadsa shit in my eyes, so much and so bad, i nearly went to the eye hospital down the road! i smacked my fingers and hands on almost everything underneath the rear of the car, and then when i lowered the diff onto the gearbox stand, i dropped the f*cking thing on my thumb!!! 50kgs from a 2 inch drop, straight onto my thumb, which got sandwiched between the diff and the platform on the g'box stand! DAMN!!!

got her in now though, and with a fresh batch of Castrol SWX-XJ diff oil in there... heres learning how to drive a slipper!!!!

I nearly blinded myself months ago trying to remove the bolts to the diff on my car. Pulling with all my force on the spanner when it slipped off and hit me in the eye! I couldnt see for a few minutes after!
