Just nipped to the garage in car as it was pissing down, and i noticed the windscreen wiper were only working at half speed and stero was freaking out.
Then about half way there the car started cutting out, so i turned off the lights and stereo and she ran fine, got to the garage and when i came out and went to start again she wouldnt fire up. not even turn over.
All windows and stuff still work though!
Any ideas guys, it still at the garage now parked up!

Ok, after speaking to a few zoners on the phone, many thanks simon13, dipps, 318is and kos the general opinion is the alternator has packed up, ive just been down to try and jump start it with jump leads but it still wont start. the jump leads were not the best, so still not sure what the problem is.
i guess i need to get a fully charged batery in there and then work out whats going on.
can anyone else shed some light on this?
the car still stuck down at the petrol station and really need to move it

Do you know any one with an AA/RAC card so you can get it jump started/towed back home ?
Or mate with a tow rope ?
It does sound like a duff altinator.

I have an alternator in surrey if you are interested and if ti will get you going if you sort me out some dough i will bring it down and we can fit it and you jump it of the m5 if that dont start it nothing will.
if tha lternator is knackered it will cause a drain on the batt and ti will be fucked again in a few hours you will prob find its the voltage regulator that has actually gone

i remember the exact same symptoms with my mk2 golf,,,, which turned out to be an alturnator problem.
keep us posted let us know if everything cool.
btw, on subject of alturnators does a m42 alturnator go on a m20?? or vice versa??

Cheers for the help yesterday stu
Bit of an update, i managed to fully re-charge up my battery today, poped it in the car and she started first time
I manged to borrow a multi meter (i think)today as well. Having a bit of a problem using it though.
I started the car, clipped black lead from the multi to the battery and positive sensor to the positive on the battery. The car was running and i was told to hold in this possition and watch for a drop in the reading.
I had the multi set at 600v and the reading was a steady 017 i think and didnt droo.
Not sure if i have the correct multi meter (got it off a builder) or the right setting to test propperly, can anyone help?
many thanks

there should be two leads coming out the multi metre, black and red. put the red on the battery positive and the black on the battery negative.
set the multimetre to the voltage reading an wahhlaa!
