Looks like the US guy with the iX servo has the engine tilted over further to raise the TB above the m/c.
This will give even less space to thread the steering through the exhaust on RH drive cars.

jaistanley wrote:The onloy problem I can see with the iX stacked servo is that it may push the master cylinder further out, fouling the large rubber 'sock' (on S50 engines, not sure about M50).

Anyone agree?
Thats what I was thinking. It may work on the M50/52 by tilting the engine, but then as Brian said, even less room on the exhaust side.
I dont think the iX servo would work on the S50 because of the size of the rubber intake boot - the master cylinder fouls this with the standard E30 servo.

Mind you, Ive never seen an iX servo, so it would be case of try and fit one and see what problems there are.

One question - whats the idea/advantage of the iX servo over the standard E30 servo - I mean how does making it a smaller diameter but 'thicker' give the same brake assist?

I think the normal E30 and the IX servo give the same brake power, It was made like that because of the 4x4 system on the IX

The distance between master cylinder and throttle body doesnt look too far different to mine TBH.

The use of an iX servo requires the brake fluid resevoir to be mounted in a remote location, not on top of the m/c.

Also you can see in the pic that mine came with the 2 blanking plugs already in the audi M/S.

If anyone knows the part number (ECP/GSF/AUDI) of this master cylinder please let me know as it's the last piece in my puzzle !

It took me months to find this one on ebay !
This one isnt very common, the 23 mm one is though.
Try the audi breakers on ebay, tell them as long as its got 25ZV on it its ok.
I dont know the part number for this appart from that.

I was referring to busters,
but I also PM´d him and it´s the Mk2 Golf,
I think it will solve S50 and M50 problems,
well if anything sorts the S50 problem then it would do the same for the M50

Phoned Audi regarding the Master Cylinder and got a part number. The guy said he couldn't guarantee it was the right one and it was £290 plus vat!

Tried 24/7 breakers but no luck!

Tried ebay steve!

Thats what the guy said but would need to be platinum plated for that money!

Just gonna have to keep trawling the online parts places.

There is a really decent breakers in Coventry specialising in VW/Audi/Skod/Seat. I knew the owner really well when I had a MK2 golf (he was a really decent guy and gave me loads of discount cos I was a poor student with a serious MK2 golf habit to support!)

Sandburns Breakers, they are slap bang next to the new arena.

They'll have loads.

I'll try and take a pic of mine tomorrow if it aint raining !
I actually moved my servo over 0.5" to get a bit more clearance.

I have taken the carbon plenum off for now until i can go MAF'less as there is no room for one with it fitted.

Jhonno, have a look at my website http://www.m3touring.com and the second last pic in the Project bit shows the setup. Maybe the wrong angle?

My car is getting exhaust done just now but can take pics when its back.

sandy,
my plenum was much closer to the mastercylinder than yours is.
Did you mount your engine further over ?
I have the same clearance now but thats only after i moved the servo over on the bulkhead. Also i only took a small amount out of my plenum compared to yours but its the clearance at the intake boot that looks more on yours.

I used M5 rubber mounts. I'll take some clearer pics when I get the car back. There is not a lot of clearance between Intake boot and M/C and Reservoir I'd say 5mm?

Do we know what a sensible amount of clearance is for this application? I'd be concerned about engine movement fouling the MC casing with 5mm.

There has to be a middle ground between grinding the plenum and fittign a hydraulic brake system.

Going servo-less is one option but not a great idea for road use I'd guess.

Hmmm.

So:

1. Brake MC clearance
2. Exhaust manifold
3. Radiator / fan?

Seem to be the main logistical obstacles to making the engine fit. I'd guess that 2 can be solved by custom fabrication (although prolly a four figure bill as well). 1 seems to be insurmountable without serious relocation of the MC and or use of a different from of assistance. I wonnder how much hassle it would really be to fit a hydraulic system fro man E32.

1) Golf servo gives enough clearance an a M50 plenum, Audi M/C gives sufficient clearance on the air hose, and the standard servo an d M/C can be used (as I have) if they're moved across to the inner wing a bit.
2) Front M50 E36 manifold fits OK, rear manifold neads the flange cutting off and welded back as close as possible to where the three primaries meet. Took me an evening to weld a few bits of E30 and E36 front pipes together to couple the modded manifold to standard 325 pipes just in front of the support at the back of the gearbox.
3) Standard 325 rad fits perfectly, and a 5 or 7 series aircon fan fits neatly in front of it.
My costs for that lot barely reached double figures, let alone four figures.
