Had it done earlier this week cost me £233 (318is) they set the timing right and the chain was replaced with tensioner and freak me it's fast! Noticable faster than it was before it went it I cant quite believe the difference.

thought I'd let you all know I'm so pleased lol

Interested to hear it made so much difference to the car, had it done many miles / did it sound bad etc?

I appreciate it was due to timing being off, but was this due to stretch/wear/slack, chain jumping teeth, or incorrect assembly?

oh sorry i see. dunno, reckon you've got all the options there though. think you'd know about it if it was a whole tooth out though. and would have thought chain stretch would have to be quite severe. many years ago, prob 5+ years ago now, i checked the cam timing my bro's is with 160+k miles on it and it was fine - orig chain. the chain on mine that i removed at the wknd was absolutely spot on, but mine's qutie low miles. i'd imagine incorrect assembly would be quite a likely candidate.

Yeah i have to agree with Tim, if the chain jumped teeth you would have known about it right away! The chain doesnt stretch that much either!

So what is the motivation to change the chain then? If it were worn guides/sprockets I can envisage a need to replace, but so many seem to change just the chain and tensioner as in this case. Is it the contacting surfaces of the chain/sprockets that become overly worn or something else I haven't considered?

Well i dont see the point in just doing the chain, i would also do the guids as it will take ten more min to change!

If people are trying to do it on the cheap it could be a reason for just doing the chain.

I'll pass. when I got it it idled really lumpy and revved like fuck but once I'd had it a couple of days it started doing really stupid stuff and being proper gay so I started to swop bits and gave up and took it to get diagnosed and that was the main problem.

I think it was possibly down to everything you mentioned?
