Anyone know if the Manual and Auto centre consoles are interchangeable? Does the Auto changer use the same shape hole as the Manual gaitor?

yes they the same
theres a wee metal bit underneath that bolts it down to floor iirc you have to swap them as they are diff shape

Auto will go straight on a manual,but, for a manual on an auto, the fixing hole for the screw that holds the plastic gear stick gate will be missing.
As long as he has a scrap auto console, the relevant bit is only held on by two screws.
