I lifted the spark basemap from the motronic, extrapolated the load/rpm sites to match the MS setup( more sites) then altered to suit where required.

mini update.

I'm upgrading my car to DIS COP ingnition over the next few weeks, fatter spark, no mechanical losses form the dizzy/rotor combo will allow larger spark plug gaps and more boost.

Dont really"need" to do this mod but its cost effective @ the mo as I need the cap and arm replacing anyways and costs are comparable.. ish, well thats what I told Lorraine anyways

That's very odd about the signal to the tacho.

Mine doesn't seem to move about all that smoothly, but it's pretty accurate all the way up to 6500rpm odd (only done that once but the Emerald shoots the tacho up to the previous max revs before you start the engine)

Was pretty sure it was just a square wave 12v signal.

Things like older Pugs use a funny 350v back EMF signal from the collapsing field of the ignition coil as the signal for the coil, but Beemer seemed to keep things simple.

Really couldn't live without a tacho!

not as yet, done a bit more on it today as I'm waiting @ home for some E38 parts for a motor I have up @ the unit, still nothing grrrrrrrr

TBH, the install part is not bad, the motronic loom already has all you'll need for it, easy enough to patch into the existing underdash loom and mod the AFM connector for the MS, inatke air temp sensor

then the real fun begins

I have about 135 ish MS maps for BMws and some ford engines now, all work well but offer variations on a theme, you really can tune the car to whatever you like, lean burning high ignition advance fuel saver, or road burning fuel guzzling monster, the info is the same its what yu do with it thats the biggest factor in what you get out @ the end.

MS, or similar would be an excellent thesis topic, or upgrade for anyone doing NVQ or similarin automotive science.

Ok so it's taken me a while to get my head around this but it looks like it is the most cost effective way of doing a MAF conversion.

Ant, when you first showed me the MS unit I was really curious about it.

Considering the ridiculous cost of an SMT6 piggyback (Ԛ£480 from CA Automotive) - why bother with just a MAF?!

MS sounds really good for improving throttle response, power delivery, fuel economy etc plus the bonus of having a variable tuning/diagnostic tool just by plugging in a lap top.

Will go for it on the 325i when the AFM dies. The high mileage of my 325 puts me off doing it for the sake of it. Am I being too cautious?

How's the cold start?

Does the removal of distributer make a difference to running and in what way?

Really want to try this out on an M10 engine when I can find a decent one as a project car. Someone said they were going to do this but lost track of who it was and if it ever happened.

Cheers Ant - will hopefully meet up with MattG at some point if he would be so kind :D .

 The more I read about this the more tempting it becomes - especially now I've got off my arse and got a better job and the laptop that came with it! Gadget time...
