I've seen these sell on ebay for under £500 daz, but an engine that's been stood about and not knowing what the car was like where it came from is the risky end, plus any bits that are missing can be expensive to track down.

can get a known good engine with loom ecu etc etc for between £1000/£1200

thats got history etc and can see and hear running before removal

so hopefully wouldnt have to go as far as 5/6k to get it all in and working winkeye

but obviously it never stops at dropping an engine in lol

you'll be very suprised at how the costs add up.. i added up what ive spent a while back and it was @4k or so iirc spent more since also, and got more to spend. Its by no means a cheap conversion at all even tho i supposedly got a nearly complete setup..

That doesnt seem a bad price if you know of the engine. You could get one cheaper but with lack of history etc, it would be a bit of a gamble.

£5k would be a good budget to set if you would be doing the work yourself. Its all the little things that soon add up, plus suspension and brake upgrades etc. And like you said, it never stops at just dropping the engine in....

well its a case of buyin new parts such as prop guibo, release bearing, and consumables, things that its an ideal time to change whilst its out the car as well as manifold and exhaust work £Â£Ã‚£

can use the e36 front suspension and brakes yeah, might be better off staying 4 stud and buyin a 4 pot setup like the zone shop is offering soon

also have the servo issues with the plenum..

and obviously suspension upgrades to cope

assuming chassis has already been uprated to cope.. remember e36 m3's ran 315mm front brakes!!

engine and box
engine mounts
manifold redone as it hits the subframe and antiroll bar
new clutch as the engine is out
m3 prop
do something with the brake servo
new guibo as its all off
m3 lsd
wiring
exhaust
release bearing whilst its all off also
service (obviously)
leccy fan
airbox/filter of some description
rad/pipework
throttle cable (e36 m3 one needs shortening)
ews (if you get post 96 engine)

all i can think of atm.. it soon adds up this has cost me alot more than i thought it would and ive got more to go  be a bit fun when its done tho!

not necessarily, depends how you get the engine (buying a breaker is the best option for getting everything)

standard e36 pipes dont fit straight up, need some modding/e30 ones

leccy fan isnt standard

standard airbox doesnt fit

its all the little issues you come up against that start costing, bits worn here bits missing/needed there its difficult to list. I've added up what ive spent and know it isnt cheap.

Oil cooler needs some attention also.. bmw used an odd size fitting so its not bolt on. Ive bought an adapter to an10 from the states and shall be using a mocal

you could get a e36 m3 thats been in a crash or something, then you would get everything and try and get some money back on whats left, could you not use a e30 m3 fan, and as for the air box could you not use a cone filter and heat sheld

There are e36 M3's on autotrader for around 4k, i would just go for one of those and sell all the bits you dont need

When you just list some parts and add up the rough cost you are still missing all the small bits you will find along the way.

Also, things like 'do something with the brake servo' & 'manifold redone as it hits the subframe and antiroll bar' sound really easy when you see them in a list. You just try getting it done for sensible money. It's things like this that will rapidly burn your original budget. I'm sure I'm getting nods of agreement from everyone who is currently working on similar conversions.

Ian.
I agree.
As i am nearing the end of my conversion (just on with exhaust) i know there are loads and loads of little problems along the way.
Its very easy to get the engine in there but getting everything else in and working is another matter.
My exhaust manifold is currently laid in about 7 pieces, with a lot of work needed. It will all be welded in stainless steel.
The inlet manifold to brake servo/master cylinder is the other really pain in the ass part of the conversion with no cheap easy fix.
Theres also loads of little parts that are needed. It seems that every little part you add needs modding to fit.Shortening, lengthening and general modding just to get it all to work.

£100 for example just to get the prop shortened and welded with the correct end.Engine mounts, fuel pump , wiring consumables, service parts, rubber hoses and pipe work that doesnt come with the engine, larger rad, electric fan, complete custom exhaust system (not cheap) ,custom brakets and gearbox mount (if using 6 speed), 5 series sump and dipstick tube and stick, upgraded brakes and suspension etc etc,
then theres all the stuff like new bolts ,and paints and crap to make it all look nice.
Lots of tools needed also, not just a halfords socket set and spanner kit.If your doing your own fab work a mig set will be needed and a tig set for modding the plenum chamber ( or pay for some one to do it).

Not that i want to put anyone off doing this, just be prepared for a lot of hard work.

tell me u are not modding that C1 with an engine change?!

bottom line lots of work and lots of dollar and not for the faint hearted it would seem.

Seems to be a hard/fairly complex conversion to do and get a good job at the end. I'd forget it if u can't or don't have the knowledge to do most of it yourself

still in the planning stages at moment

but its good to hear all the oppinions and experiences

maybe i was a little naive but im not put off yet

the fitting/piping/plumbing in isnt a problem as i can do that side of things

looks like the only dodgy part would be the fabrication
mainly finding someone who wont totaly rape me on costs

keep all suggestions coming
knowledge is power n all winkeye

cheers for all replys so far lads

Damn i crave them horses soo much
if it could be done on a cheaper conversion then i would

what other conversions could give the same sort of beast ???

it something im not major keen on tbh

have had a few turbos allbeit small engined many years ago
and i always seem to kill them

that and turbo lag as well

is supercharging an option at all??

i may have to start a new thread and see what people think

im guessing the turbo route could be taken for a bit less cost??

turbo conversion will be cheaper and easier and give the same kinda of power output with more torque
