how long does re-spray take labour wise, worth it?

when i took the car for mot the tester (the owner of the garage) said it was in remarkably good condition. the only structural rust was a small bit on the sill.

the rear arch needs doin, will post pic in a bit, and few little bits of surface rust.

it was keyed on the passenger side, and somone bashed my colour coded mirror, and somethin hit my boot, so i think a complete respray would be a good idea.

how long does it take roughly i.e am i looking at 20+ hours of labour @ £30 per hour?

its sterling silver, and i guess i need quite a few litres!

my dad runs a bodyshop but isnt the owner, so can't do my car in "office hours" and i dont like to ask him to work on his day off. so probably want it done local to ambleside in the lakes.


its a 1991 4dr 318i and i would like to keep it for years to come i realise it wont add value to the car but a re-spray may stop the rust getting
terminal.

Is it worth re-spraying?



sills are sound as have had the small hole repaired, bit of surface rust on the top of the sill under the passenger doors (I assume wehre water drips down or somethin.

Its your dad, you dont ask him you tell him, also if he does indeed run a bodyshop, then he could get paint very cheap and he could ask a "friend" do to the job for you!

Your talking £2000 for a proper job and thats still cheap.

Minor problem is dad is in west wales, im only 60 miles from scotland..

im sure dad could do it, but would mean borrowing a car driving two cars down. getting a lift back and not having a car till its done.

as for paint, when dad did my micra (after an incident i had with a hedge)a litre of nissan micra paint was £25 so guess sterling silver be twice that, how many litres would i need?

You need to think about replacing that rust with good metal and protecting what you've got with under body paint products and waxoyl in those sills. No point repainting that it will be bubbling up again in 6 months. Cut out the old shit,replace with new shit last thing to worry about is paint.

Just get a couple of cars on the vauxhall 3 day test drive, after the first 3 days take it back and say you'dlike to try another one, until ya cars ready!

materials will be expensive, paint, laquer, thiners, primers, welding, filler etc


a lot of people dont actaully realise what it take to paint a car, steve got one thing right, £2000 for a full paint job is about right for an e30

and to do it, its a a lot more than 20hours work,

I have receipts for the spray job done on mine last summer before i got it, totally 2.6k, top notch job done though

The 3 day test drive would be good but i'm 2 yrs too young
(also my drivers licence has the wrong address on it....)

ho hum. my other half fancies selling this car now so doesnt want to spend on it. longest we've had a car is 14 months. (apart from his first e30 which he has had 6 years but never drives)


will ask dad's opinion on it though.
