could be fueling/timing issues, does the xhaust noise happen all the time or only when juddering,

what engine do you have?

Cars and girlfriends have alot in common.
They both make you angry+ make you cry, bleed your wallet + moan when they are old.
But at least the car makes sense!

Standard amswer is "blue temp sender". (Screwed into the thermostat housing, top front of engine.

Dud blue temp sensor would cause the engine to overfuel when hot, and cause a missfire. Trouble is, several other things can cause a missfire as well, and it's near impossible to tell you which from 200 miles away.
Don't assume a new part is always a good part, especially if it didn't come in a BMW box.
The signal from the temp sensor goes through a round plug and socket fixed to the metalwork under the inlet manifold. Corrosion in here can cause problems.
Distributor cap, rotor arm and plugs are all candidates, as are the inlet manifold gaskets and rubber air hoses.

Thanks Brian, I called the aa guy at the weekend to see if they can share any light. he took the distributor cap off and cleaned it up, whilst he was trying to put it back on he I think broke a bit off the round plastic!!!! obviously he said that is the cause for the missfire(backfire) so I went to Halfrauds to get replacement cap an rotor. Still same problem.. Backfire!!! make things worse whilst trying to take off the blue temp switch I bloody ended up breaking the brown one!!!!!!! still havent maneged to change the blue one. AAAAARRRGGGHHHH!

I had to get the lovely london transport today to work.

Also brian i checked the spark plugs they look fine slightly brown in colour but ok. The fuel pump is slightly noisey but i wouldnt have thought that would be any probs? Sorry for making it long, thats the only way I guess is to get it off the chest. end of the day this is a friendly site(zone) :)

Hi H-M3,

Are we talking of an M3 here ?

If yes, your symptons suggest that your Flywheel sensors are going defective or need cleaning.

Nearside of the bellhousing, about a third of the way up, alloy cowl, undo the 2 x 10mm bolts holding the cover in place.
Undo the 2 x10mm bolts holding the sensors in place.

Remove sensors, clean well with white spirt, dry and replace, do not bolt up tight.
Start car, if car still the same remove the sensors again and swap them around, top for bottom etc, but remember to swap them as well at the electrical connectors behind the plastic cowl on the bulkhead.

If this does not work, do not forget to then swap them back.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

The Gorilla.

Hi H-M3,

OK, I do not know much about 325's, but it still sounds like a fueling/ ignition problem, at operating temp.

Suggestions -

Check Fuel pump Relay - Can warm up when going faulty
Crank Position Sensor working- think you have one at the front of the engine
MAF/AFM - may need cleaning / can be done carefully
Sticking Injector- when engine has warmed up

You need to go through a step by step process, otherwise your pi**ing in the wind.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

The Gorilla.

Have you checked the plug and socket under the manifold that I mentioned?

I do beleive you might have a lambda sensor on your exhaust. Check to see if you have, might solve your problem by renewing this.

it does have a lambada sensor there, but i took the cat off and replaced with stainless steel ones long time ago. The exhaust makes loud banging noise as as if air is trapped. (shot gun)

Brianmoore no i didnt check the bit your on about, I will do so. Do i have to undo anything to get to it? sorry dumb Q.

Also how much would a lambada sensor cost?

Removing the air filter / AFM assembly would make it easier to get to.
