haha - sure it will.. RST's dont sound all that loud with those systems. You'll prolly here more of the turbo with that wastegate

what sort of figures are you expecting/hoping for when its done?

hehe - i have the issue that isnt out yet.. its FAB! hard to get hold of though, only place I can get it from is WHSmiths - no where out of town stocks it.. but grab one, there is a buyers guide to UR Quattros - If only I had that sort of money, talking digi dash too.... awesome cars!!!! winkeye

Ants car thats featured in the following issue just sold on ebay for £1169... GUTTED :x , its worth SO much more!! But that still gives him enough for him to rejoin the BMW club with his e39 540i (manual)...

.. who's up for getting him to push it too much take the back end off drifting and steal that lovely 4.4v8 and 6 speed MANUAL box.... hmmmm!

took a while to even find this thread :(

lots of small bits sorted, still a few bits unresolved...

manifold flanges being cut thanks to Gareth and his CAD skills (that's TWELVE Gareth, so you better start thinking about which turbo to buy winkeye )

oil line and T-piece botched/welded together from an audi A4 turbo one and a few other bits. pressure tested on the starter and seems fine.

oil return caused a bit of grief. took the sump off (which means the bloody crossmember and everything else and hold the engine on a hoist), drilled and tapped as high up as possible, put it back together. but when i filled with oil to test the oil feed line it turned out my holes were still way below the oil level when full :x . so it's all off again at the moment. I've put a 16mm hole through an untapped blank in the lower part of the block, and a 16mm section of pipe through the hole with a weld round the outside. it will probably crack, but the pipe goes right through the block and is a tight fit, so it won't leak catastrophically if it does.

walbro copy fuel pump ordered ($90 delivered!), as there isn't even one in there at the moment

got a BBR boost gauge, removed the clock internals and installed it where the clock went, which looks ok.

Also been thinking about gearing. i have a 3.25 m3 lsd to put on eventually, but it's noisy and needs a rebuild. which i can't afford at the moment! so i have a 2.93 525e open diff on the way, to use in the meantime. thought this might be a bit long and i'd be dropping off boost between gears, so i had a look at the gearing calculator...

6k limit/205 50 15 rear tyres/2.93 diff:

1st 37mph
2nd 64mph (drop to 3500 rpm)
3rd 100mph (3800)
4th 140mph (4300)
5th 173mph (4800

I've included the engine speed it will drop to on each upchange, assuming an instant gearchange. interested in opinions on these - i think it looks like i'll be ok (i.e. the gearing is very long but the engine shouldn't drop off boost except possibly between first and second)

what do you think though?

this also means that 70mph real speed (75 ish indicated) will be 2400rpm which mean motorway cruising will be way off boost and fairly efficient.

one question: what inlet air temp sensor have other standalone/MS users installed? i have a threaded one that was ordered with the MS kit, and don't know what i'm supposed to screw it into, i haven't got a tap the right size...

will update with pics shortly.

Hi mate !

The gearing with the Eta diff seems about right, the amount of boost depends more on load and throttle opening than the Rpms, given the sizing of the turbo I'd imagine she'll go very well indeed on that gearing

As for the IAT, you can use a Bosch M12 unit from fiat/audi/vw etc etc and easy therm to get over the tapping issue, the MS units are 5/8th NPT, most engineering shops should have a tap to suit, best place to locate it is into the intake plenumn itself, right behind the throttle plate, should ensure a good flow accross the sensor for accurate readings.

on a side note, the latest firmware supports coolant and air temp related density correction so intake temp heatsok should not affect the runnig of the engine.

My IAT is in the lower charge pipe, it works fine but can go into its deadband @ lower thorttle settings, then the reading goes to -26 degrees C, in short I need to move mine but that can wait until the wasted spark is sorted.

Good progress though fella, not long now then , Wohoooooo !

dibs on a test drive BTW

Our IAT sensors are GM parts I think and we just used a nut welded to the charge pipe to fir it, not quite perfect but it was thread locked also to prevent leaking.

Did you get a sensor with your ms kit or are you hunting for one?

Good work too dude!

(p.s. sell me the m3 diff, I don't care about the whinning :D )

guys just a question i dont know much about these cars iv just bought a bmw 325i sport E30 i dont know what has been done to the engine but when i pull off in 1st gear the front of the car lifts about half a meter off the floor because of the power i want to know is this normal? or has it had mods all the engine is chromed and in imaculate condition its all greased and oiled but iv driven some fast cars and been in 615bhp skylines but nothing will touch this car like so far iv had 140 out of 4th gear and i shit out and slowed down is this normal help!!!!!!!!!!

not for a while yet mate!

pics as promised...

boost gauge (yes i know the paint on the bezel is fcuked!)

Image

Image

hot side plumbing all done. pleased with this...

Image

Image

and the oil feed. the welds need grinding down to check for pinholes, but it don't leak under pressure, even when cranked continuously with a welded bung in place of the turbo. however when the oil's hot and thin it may be a different matter!

Image

Image

Image

oil feed routing is quite subtle considering how far it has to go. drain should be ok too now, it's a nice big pipe and a long drop to the drain tapping.

picked up a nice 525e diff from mr Argos tonight, so that's one less thing to worry about...

just measured the diff and it's actually a 3.07, so the revised 6000rpm speeds are

35
61
96
134
166

happy with that!

apart from getting the mani flanges back and welding up the manifold/exhaust it's just tidying up loose ends now Glenn.

which at this rate will take me until about july 2010

Hey toby - looks good (like the turbo gauge in the dash). I still have the MD power cable form the M535i if you want it btw. If you send me an address I will mail it to you with some cash too!

The M535i failed its MOT but only on the steering box and a few small holes in the floor which I am having looked at tomorrow hopefully. The brakes are odd as hell but they passed! LOL

Anyway - turbo is looking good - cant wait to see it finished! :P

why the singular 'turbo'? the plural 'turbos' has a better ring to it!!!

i was thinking of 2 T4's...

realistically, i need to get one 16" alpina (i smashed one while running a chav over!) :? and replace my dented bolt-on panels first but i'm sure i'll do it at some point! :D

a LPG conversion may be nice too!!! 8O

Sounds about right Jon!

manifold flanges arrived today. Thanks once again to Gareth for converting my measurements into CAD. they're perfect

Image

Image

Still arsing about with the manifold. Decided to put a dividing baffle in as a few people have suggested, which is done. Just need to play about with the backplate to try to get the crosssection area consistent, before i weld it up permanently.

Image

Image

Image

Walbro 255 type fuel pump mounted on original in tank bracket, plumbed in and working. under $90 delivered, cheaper than OEM and much higher flow. :D Still using 3 bar regulator for now.

Image

Image

plenty of other daft stuff done now like rescuing the horn from the boot and remounting it somewhere where the intercooler isn't, making a proper bracket for the pug washer bottle and splicing into the loom to run the washer pump. bloody tax is out in a few days and it the mot has just run out :x

it's actually lighter than stock Glenn, the cast m30 ones aren't light. going to brace it from the cam cover all the same though - it's pretty heavy with that turbo and wastegate on :D

Andy, bad news about the engine, hopefully it will arrive soon :?

have also sorted a Vectra turbine heat shield and welded up a mount, looks good but no pics as the turbo/manifold's off at the moment

nearly there 8)

not replied to many mails/pms last couple of days, sorry. been a busy boy.

MS 99% wired. oil return done. air plumbing done. signal lines tapped. exhaust rejigged to give more ground clearance. 3.07 diff fitted. fuel pump and injectors installed. just taken manifold and exhaust off to seam weld and that's about it.

How much clearance between the dizzy cap cover and rad?? 8O
Is that a normal M30 conversion thing or because youve had to make room for the intercooler?

James, you can sit the engine slightly further back but not much. the clearance looks better with the black dizzy cap cover off, which i was running before. hasn't caused any problems having it that close so far, there's a fair few mm :D

rad hasn't been moved since IC went in.

made a flange and stub for the wastegate

Image

Image

it's not warped even though it looks like it in the pic

manifold stubs about to be seam welded to flanges on spare head. just the manifold itself now, (and the rest of the exhaust!)

well after a very long day of grinding and welding i nearly have an exhaust manifold. just a few joints left to weld, a lot done inside to try to improve exhaust flow.

welded up bolted to a spare head, flanges haven't stayed 100% true unfortunately but hopefully the gasket will sort this out... worst case have to machine it flat which won't be the end of the world.

sorry for the shite pics, it's a bit dark!

Glenn, it might be. would i dare to take it if so is a better question :D
