are there any tell tale signs of a faulty fuel pump.......as above it has developed a loud buzzin and in the past few weeks after replacing the head etc, the idling is just above 500 rpm and feels lumpy....(passed mot like this)

Your car was born with the old two pump system - a priming pump in the tank, and a high pressure one just in front of the rear left wheel.kirils wrote:i have the same problem, my fuel pump is loud, when the car is working i don't hear the engine or anything else only the fuel pump, and my car when is on running temp it's just above the first line 500rpm, but no vibration, or something like that, i have a 320i from 1983, the first e30
This set up is inherently noisy, but if it's become noisier, then the in tank pump has probably died.
Both pumps can be replaced by a single in tank one, (+ a short piece of HP fuel hose.)

Tnx Brian for the info, yes the noisy pump is under the car in fron of the rear left wheel, in moments it becomes a bit more loud than agan not that loud, so what kind of fuel pump should i look for from later e30 models?

Any E30 from '88 on will do the job, or you can find an in tank pump from a pre '88.kirils wrote:Tnx Brian for the info, yes the noisy pump is under the car in fron of the rear left wheel, in moments it becomes a bit more loud than agan not that loud, so what kind of fuel pump should i look for from later e30 models?

Hi Brian
I have a similar noise coming from my 327 this has two pumps 1 intank and the other at side of wheel.
I disconnected the one at the wheel and fitted one from a 1989 320 in the tank.
The car would not start? Why?
The 325 cars has two pumps both in the tank.
Is it possible to fit a post 1989 tank with both pumps and will the 327 run.
your thought pls
Imran

Any E30 only has one pump in the tank. The other is a second level sensor that some cars have.
Link across pins 30 and 87 of the fuel pump relay so that power is fed to the pump continuously and check that it is running. If not, check (with a 12V lamp) that power is reaching the pump.
I have a theory that fuel pumps that are removed from a tank and stored without being oiled tend to go faulty.
