[b]checking gearbox for probs??????[/b]

im checking over my gear box soon after loud whining sounds coming from that area, (getrag 240 m10 box)
is there anything in particular i should look out for or avoid doing, im familiar with gearboxes but my experience with them is low and limited to classic mini's.

i assume bearing damage will be obvius by sight and are there wear marks on the gears?

anything i will have to replace if i undo or worth replacing whilst im there?

any advice/ pointers appreciated

wondering about the fluid aswell, if it is a fluid prob thats making the noise is there a way of checking it for fault i.e viscosity, colur, smell,

oh well, ive got into it now and it was nowhere near the no go i thought it was going to be. hopefully ill have some pics up as soon as i figure out how!

if anyone has any info on specifics to look out for it would be great, im gonna try and put up a diy on gearbox inspection + diagnosis if i can get the feedback.

so far ive got shift mechanism and synchronizers nailed (me thinks) details on clearances where applicable would be very useful, ive figured out how it all works, could do with common probs + remedies

the box im doing is the common getrag 240 5 speed not the best but common, and then ill have a go at a getrag 245 when i can get my hands on one

whatever info you may have however small it is pls pop it in a post and stick it below, hopefully we can erradicate the "mystery status" which seems to be attatched to manual transmission
