OK.......so i've been a lazy arse and i have had this TB for ages, but i've actually started working to fit the bloody thing ! :)

(I thoght i'd post this in this section for all the 335er's)

I bought a spare manifold to go on my car whilst i work on my port matched manifold/TB so i can still use the car.

Swapping the manifold/injectors/fuel rail/TB/etc isn't straight forward on my car because the servo is to close to the manifold so you can't pull it of the head studs :?

So undo the master cylinder and pull it forward, glove box out and undo the servo bolts, pull the servo out the way and the rest of the job was straight forward. It took me about 3 or so hours at a fairly relaxed pace to swap all the parts over.

Lets get busy with the angle grinder, no going back now !

This is the first rough cut hole which was care fully enlarged to fit the adapter plate later on.

Image

In side the manifold.

The inside edges of the hole i cut were chamfered/rounded off so the air doesn't have any sharp edges/angles to obstruct it's flow in side the plenum.

Image

The mating face on the manifold i thought was fairly flat has a nice curve :? So cut the long sides of the hole in the manifold so that the adapter plate only sit's on top of the manifold on the short sides and the long sides sit "in" the hole.

before..........

Image

and after...........

Image

This is the face of the adapter plate that is in side the plenum, so the air doesn't have to go around a nasty 90 degree edge as it enters the plenum i rounded the edge's of the two holes with a file.

One down one to go, oh i had so much fun with the file  :)

Image

Off to the engineering shop who can TIG weld cast alloy.

Original TB hole blanked of

Image

Adapter plate welded on and new TB bolted on, they look like nice tidy welds that should be air tight once painted(incase theres any tiny pin holes ?)

Image

They also drilled a hole in this spare piece of 20mm alloy for me because i didn't have a big enough drill bit. This piece of alloy is going to house the TPS adapter the Alex kindly made for me as the Ford TB has a flat blade type TPS spindle and i need the normal "D" TPS spindle.

Image

Things to do.........

Make a card board gasket for the TB
Cross my fingers that i can use my old throttle cable and make a new bracket
fit M30 air box and cross my fingers that the E46 M3 intake elows/elbow that Ian is kindly giving me will fit both the TB and the air box
paint manifold and re-fit

Which leeds me on to my manifold cosmectics question, i will be using the same textured/wrinkle effect black paint that i have used on my rocker cover as the texture will help to hide any rough areas on the manifold like the grinding marks i caused when i cleaned the metal up so it was ready to weld.

The question is should i bother grinding smooth the TIG welds and i was also thinking of grinding off the casting seems of the manifold to sort of tidy it up if you know what i mean ?

I also could grind off the old throttle cable bracket mount ?

What do you think ?

That looks great Andy, apart from those big ugly bolts :(
Now get some cap-screws in it!

I would just smooth the weld on the blanking plate "carfully"

Smooth out the rest of the casting marks and it will look A1

Smoth everything, except the welds, good welding shouldn't need grinding flat, and welds as sexy as that should be left. Deffo grind off the old cable mount.
Good job mate.

It's from a US Ford V8 32v of some kind, sorry i can't remember exactly which model it came from but if you browse the ebay.com for TB's theres loads on there for not much money.

Theres a bit of a story behind those bolts as Captin Fuck Up invaded my brain temporarily ! :)

I'd got some new M8 studs and nuts left over from another job that i was going to use but instead of picking up a 7mm drill bit i picked up an 8mm some how so the holes were too big ! :cheese:

So i had to use M10 instead

Thanks for all your feed back guys :thumb:

The biggest hinderence(sp?) to getting this on and running is the lack of a lap top to change the fueling on my Emerald ECU, i was going to buy one but i've just forked out £333 for my car insurance.

It's a shame because Dell has got a special offer on for a basic lap top for £300 inc VAT + delivery :(

Thing is that wont have a serial port! IMO anything with win98 will be more than enough and will have a serial port for sure :D
If you only want it for mapping i will see what i can get hold of from work if you like

pretty sure that cheap dell is the one my girlfriend's just got Andy, as Len says, no serial port :(

i got an older second hand dell from ebay, higher spec than that new one and old enough to still have a serial port

Cheers mate, that will be very handy if you could sort some thing out for me, thanks ! 8)

TBH i havn't got a clue about lap tops so i was looking at the Dell lap top as a safe/fuss free option.

Mate that looks awesome! You don't hang around much do you! That looks really good all hooked up together, nicely done - the welding looks pukka imo, I would definately leave it as neat weld such as that is pure artwork!

On a different note, I may have found a solution to where I can build my 335i, so i can start collecting bits again as I had put it on hold!

As soon as I have all the bits (not sure how long that will take as funds are tight just now!) I think I may be bending your ear a bit if you don't mind mate! winkeye

Very impressed with the quality of the welds, it'd be a shame to loose them.

How do you guys work out the ways to do all these things?
