i got a 318i e30 its got a werid noise coming from the engine it sounds like tappets but more loader

the more i rev the louder it gets, i have opened the rocker cover and checked the cam for wear it looks ok to me

are there any common problems with the 1.8i engines?

or could the tappets be damaged the car drives ok but also takes long to change gear its a auto any ideas any or if some one has had a simialr problem?

if its an m40 engine (dissy on end of cam+ boxy looking rocker cover) tappet noise is very common, if it happens really bad within the last 1500 rpm or so before redline it'll probably be the cam, only needs slight wear on the tips of the lobes to bring this on,
or it could be the hydraulic tappets, they are the small round things underneath the rocker arms (that the cam pushes) the surface that the arm pushes against should be totally level.

if its an m10 engine (got a traditional distributor + rounder shape rocker cover) either the cam is worn or the tappets need re-adjusting, probably the later and real simple to do

Cars and girlfriends have alot in common.
They both make you angry+ make you cry, bleed your wallet + moan when they are old.
But at least the car makes sense!
