I am going to look at two E30's with the possibility of buying one. one is a 318 and the other a 325. I am just a bit concerned that the 325 will drink petrol like its going out of fashion. Are they quite thirsty or if driven gently are they not that bad?

If you drive a 325i "gently" you should see around 30mpg but driving it "gently" defeats the purpose of having one. I'm happy with 200 miles to a full tank - never been one for watching the fuel guage and not interested in what mpg I'm getting.

OK, lets turn this on its head a bit........
in 9/10s driving the 318 will drink more fuel than the 325 simply because the engine has to work much harder, 10/10s would see the 318 drop well below the 325 in MPG.
Average MPG on both my stock 325's has been 26 mpg, I live right next to a motorway, but we have excellent lanes and I dont nurse it
For comparison, my Turbo'd 325 did an amzing 38 mpg on a recent 200 mile round trip @ 95 ( private track, ahem ! ) but can go as low as 15-18 when using the full "hand of god" shove.
6 pot all the way, Torque is where its at IMHO

waft along on the torque! not reving it all the time.
my 325i auto managed 402 miles on a tank the other other week with over a third of it being town driving the rest m-way. for me this is perfectly acceptable economy 30mpg

According to a BMW brochure the average fuel consumption only favours the 318i as being more economical by just 1.8 mpg in motorway and up to 5mpg better in urban driving.
That's original spec.
Consider, I suppose that the cars have done some miles now and it will depend considerably on their condition.
I put a new dizzy cap and rotor arm on mine and the WR 78 Bosch Plugs and now getting at least 2mpg better than before. Perhaps after getting new HT leads economy will be even better as I think the existing leads break down under certain loads. There are so many variables to fuel economy. I get 300 miles to a tank in my touring. You can get it as low as 200 miles or as high as 400.
Like Simon says, you can nurse the 325i around and get ok economy. Unlike the 318i, if you boot the 325i you can basically watch the petrol gauge go down (fast).
Since the E30 isn't very aerodynamic, its fuel economy on the motorway is not as good as it could be - irrespective of its engine. 32.5 vs 30.7 mpg for motorways (original spec).
So it sort of depends on what kind of driving you do. I do mainly motorways in my 325i and I'm glad of the extra power - for fun - but mainly for safety!
cheers
