Afternoon all... Sean McKeown pointed me here from 205gtidrivers.com as I'm looking into buying a 325 rag top.

Throw as much info (even the basics - I'm not easily insulted) at me as you like. If I'm buying a cab I want to make sure I get something half decent for my hard-earned!
In the meantime I'm away to have a browse round your forum and see what I can find!

(oh and in case anyone is interested the Rallye is for sale! :D )

Hi mate, cant go wrong with a 325 Cab. I have a baur but thats a whole different story. When buying a cab i think the manual top is the way to go, an automatic top is cool, but when those motors give up the ghost you are going to have a problem.
Engine wish its got the good old m20b25 in there. Autos are more common than manuals.
Because the cabs have no roof, they have thicker sills and some extra welding on the struts for rigitity (sp).
The Motorport cabs are the rare type and cost more, they mainly had the mtech2 kit and fancy bubble interior, they came in certain colors as well.
Hmm cant think of much right now , but someone will pop in to add to this.
cheers

BUG4LIFE - I've seen your car advertised (oh here and Pistonheads) but I can't stretch to the money for such a good example as yours I'm afraid. It is a gorgeous car though and I very much hope it goes to a good home. :)

I definately want a manual. Slushmatics aren't my thing at all. I have a car in mind at the moment, which has a manual roof. The more electronics on old cars the more I am nervous of them. Hand me a spanner and away I go... Give me a soldering iron and I'm useless! :D

Thanks for that Hyperion. I'm going into this with an open mind. Can't afford to get buying a BM wrong - it could end up as a nasty hole in my pocket

If you go into the tech help. There's a sticky post on things to look for when buying a 325i sport. It's a good starting place to gen up on common faults and rust areas.

Whle that's for a tin top, I guess what you need to check over and above is obviusly the roof. Look at the condidtion of the rear window, the colour of the stitching, if it's sun bleached, it'll start to fray soon enough. Look for damp in and around the cabin. A damp car will show some signs of surface rust on the runners for teh front seat. Stick yer nose into the chairs and smell for damp (obviously not the bum bit, you may get punched!!!)

Open and close the roof, make sure the tensioner straps pull it neatly into the cabin. With the roof up, open and close the doors, check to see if the windows have worn away at the roof at the point they come into contact. put all the windows down and then backup, fronts first, makes sure they sit properly and have been adjusted correctly. Check the rubber for signs of pitting. Most of all take it for a spin and get a gauge for the acceptable amount of noise. A spin iin a good one for here will give you a good bench mark.

That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure some other cab owners will add what I've forgot!!!

Welcome to the zone and good luck!

Thanks blatantarrogance :)

I've received a few more pics from the owner (I can host them if required) where I can see the start of the rot a bit clearer.

The leading corner of the rear arches (from the level of the door dubbing trim down) has started to go on both sides.

The front arches, just above the sills have also started to show signs of corrosion.

From memory these fairly common places for E30s arches to start to go am I right? The car is from Scotland where we use a lot more salt on the roads :(

On the plus side the engine bay is sparkly clean and dry (well sometimes its a plus) and there is a strut brace fitted too.

Thanks again!
