I wonder what effect getting some of that exhaust wrap would have, got to be cheap to do and would lower the under bonnet temp a bit
Cotty - you stole my thunder! I was just about to write this. I popped into my local independent car spares place last week and got chatting to the owner. He was trying to sell me some of this stuff on the basis that my 6-branch is an extremely good radiator of heat in the engine bay.

So apart from spoiling the looks of the 6-branch, does anyone think this heat-shield wrap is worthwhile? I mean, the exhaust couldn't be further away from the air-intake, so will it make any difference? The guy in the shop (who races rally cars) swears by it.

Apologies for going slightly off-topic here - i was going to start a new thread, but as it's connected to this debate, it's probably best in here.

I used to use this on my 02 racing car to stop the brake fluid boiling in the pipes from the reservoir which were very close to the tubular exhaust manifold....
Worked a treat, but I found it was cheaper and just as effective to buy asbestos blanket and cut/wrap as appropriate.

This is going to sound stupid, especially as I cant back up what Im about to say but, Ive heard arguements against using exhaust wrap.

I just cant think where I heard it or what the problem was :?

Exhaust wrap can cause problems in that it may cause the manifold to crack. Thats the only thing ive ever heard though.

As for the BMC kit for the 318iS - I think the AFM has a round connector anyway so it wuld be a direct fit. You may just have to buy a very small piece of sacmo hosing.

Now thats an idea!

Ive ordered the lead for plugging in the MBE, should be here friday.

Thanks for the excellent idea!

Bexleys are offering a plug and play MBE kit. It really is plug and play, u can take it out when ever you want.

A base map will be supplied aswell.

It will be more expensive than emerald but will be alot easier to take out if you ever decide to sell the car.

MSnS-E if you can DIY the loom ( easy !!) would be my choice and about half the :bling: too

<Shameless plug mode disabled>

As for the pipe wrapping, PITA to do it so its looks nice but well worth the effort in terms of heat reduction, my SE downpipe runs almost pink hot in its naked state, now its triple layed with wrap I can touch it even after a long run , made the Exhaust quieter though

I used to use exhaust wrap but no longer. It's horrible stuff and it eventually tears where it's exposed under the car.

Getting really confused here, and yes i know thats not hard before someone else says it.Got ak&n cone filter only because it came with car and was thinking of going back to original. Then i read all this about bmc with heatshields and indution pipes. Is there a way the k&n can be sheilded, or is it really not worth the bother?. :?

The K&N you have is probably too small.

The surface area on the K&N's kits for the 325i's is actually smaller than the surface area of the standard filter.

You also lose the trumpet inside the airbox when using this kind of kit. The result of this is that you lose low end torque.

Either go back to standard or get yourself one of the ITG kits from the zone shop.

Hi

The exhust wrap is to keep the gas temp up, as gas get hot it expands, as the gas cannot expand in the pipe, the velocity goes up. The more the gas velocity the better the scavange effect from the exhuast ports, which equals more power in theory.

Very interesting read... I've bought JimBobs old car and had been wonderingwhether the cone maybe doing it an injustice.
Sounds like it might be...
How much would a BMC with fitting kit (with cold air feed) for a 325 be then ?

i will be very interested to read the closed bonnet results, we have made similar experiments here in Bahrain but with Caterhams, we found that the under bonnet air temp on idle was on occasions actually less with the bonnet closed, (based on a like for like experimentation time, i.e start up from cold, then measure each 30 secs upto 5 mins) we assumed this was because the fans do not pull (cooler) air through the radiator with the bonnet open, but do with it closed, thus the air in the bay is more static with the bonnet open leading to more heat sink effects, with the bonnet closed the warmer air will be forced out through vents and under the gear box .

We also use the K&N filters as supplied by Cosworth when the cars come as a kit. We also experience extream drops in power especially during the summer months (but the air temp can reach ecxess of 50C anyway!!) The filter is shielded slightly but my suggestion was to shield it more. Please continue your experiments!!!, and let me know your bonnet open and closed air temp results!
