2000 miles ago I changed front and rear pads on my E30 convertible. Warning light came on yesterday, Checked and pads are fine, but one of the wires into the rear sensor is broken. Does this mean the warning system is activated by both a closed circuit (pads worn) and an open circuit as in this case a broken wire?

If wire is broken on rear sensor, then you need a new one.

If a sensor wire is broken from sn otherwise undamaged sensor, the usual cause is incorrect roting of the wires, leaving them too tight initialy.
As the pad wears and moves in, the wire becomes tight, and eventually brakes.
On the other hand, leaving too much slack can result in the wires rubbing through on the inside of the wheel well.

Well laddie unless you're an old codger or ebenezer the geezer ive heard of fellows either removing the lght bulb or closing the circuit closer to the irewall bulkhead .yes in essence this disables the system but if you love your car you probably look at the brakes ofen anyew right?

A new wear sensor is only £2odd from ECP though

Some pikey previous owner had cut the wires short and soldered them together on my rear sensor :x
Cheers,

Fairly common I'm afraid. Delphini's not the only one.
