Anyone know why m42 throttle bodie has 2 heat plates surrounding it (one between TB and intake plenium & other heat plate below TB) there piped into coolant system but it doesn't stay too cool for long with the way i drive! 8O

Not all of them do, theres another design where it just had one underneath

See here:

I believe you can just do away with them all together if you like, Tim has on his 318is

Yes this does make a rather large difference to performance if you do away with the plate. Take the car for a drive and warm it up properly then see how hot your inlet manifold gets with the plate on

take it off then go for another drive and see how cold the manifold is! it really is worth doing imho

Definately worth doing.
I did away with the one from Benjy`s iS the other day and there is a noticable difference!

Will be doing my own this week too :)

I'm still not convinced, the odd occasional time I have had to thrash my car when cold (to overtake or avoid something) it's not felt any quicker

Placebo effect?

I did this on my 318iS track car too... took out the water heated sandwich plate and re-routed all the water pipes to miss out loads of crap bends too, so it went straight back into the cylinder head. Easy enough job, but taking off the inlet manifold made it so much easier. I was replacing all the air pipes at the same time, so it made sense to kill two birds...

Oh, and I also fitted a BBTB, full stainless, K&N induction with cold air pipe and a chip at the same time. Difference was interesting! winkeye

(was Karan's old BBTB and exhaust!)

These heat plates were a recall. the 318iS' left the factory without these plates. then, BMW had to send out a campaign on every iS to get them taken to the nearest dealership to have these plates fitted for free.

i was talking to a couple of the tech's at my dealership the other day, and they were telling me about this being a recall. the reason they were all recalled was because the throttle bodies were freezing up where the cold air was rushing past, meaning that you would release the pedal, and the throttle butterfly would stay open, coz it had frozen itself together!!! hence, you wont slow down!!

i might be able to dig the campaign details out if you want???

but in my opinion, its not worth risking it....

IF i remember correctly i was one of the first to do it on the site!

stuartgallafant i think you need to stop listening to your dealer mates! Im sorry but what do they know? Have they had any first hand experience? I dont think so. I done this and drove the car with snow/ice on the roads and i can assure you it did not freeze the plates, yes maybe in Canada or the Scandinavian countries where it does get very cold i would say yes leave them on, but here in the uk we dont need them!

Ask your dealer mates why the M3 plates dont freeze over (as these have a rubber separator from the cylinder head to keep the TB's from absorbing any heat from the rest of the engine, this pad also does other things)

hmmm, let me think???

they're BMW technicians!!! some of them have been there for nearly 20 years, and they used to PDI E30's, so i think they should know a lot more about them, than a few of us!

anyway, i was just giving advice, it wasnt a lecture! thats what this forum is about aint it???

we get recalls/quality enhancements and campaigns from BMW UK all the time, where we have to swap this and change that and f*ck around with brand new cars such as E90's and M5/M6's! BMW tell us as a dealership to carry this out, as they feel this is necessary. they're the ones with the engineering brains, not anyone here...

the campaign was bulletined because it was hapenning to some cars, and causing accidents. personally, i wouldn't want to give someone some advice that would make them f*ck there car up, because i wouldn't want to recieve advice like that...

i was merely expressing some information, that is handy to know when you're playing around with cars like we do...

if you feel like my information/advice/opinions are not welcome, then ignore them. You dont have to keep chastising and bitching about things i say...

sorry if i've f*cked anyone off.....

My engine is sat on a pallet at the moment before it goes into the cab so might do this now as it is easy to get to! does it make much difference with the standard air box?
Also, just a quick question to any 318is nuts! is it worth swapping my M42 fly wheel for the one off my current M40? M40 is lighter yes?

With regard to the recall that was mentioned I can see that there may be a problem with icing up under the right circumstances. I would imaging it would be similar to"carb-icing" as experienced by motorbikes. I've had it happen several times on my bike, even though it is fitted with electric carb heaters.
The air rushing through the openings to the carb results in a drop in temperature (similar to wind-chill?) which causes moisture in the air to deposit on the sides and freeze, thus causing restricted air flow and a bike that won't go. I've had to stop on my bike to let the carbs warm up and defrost, and this isn't in overly cold conditions - I value my life too much to ride when it's freezing out.

In responce to Jackle, that is exactly what was happening, which is why BMW recalled all the iS's for this modification...

The later ones had a heated disc underneath the TB instead of the sandwich plate.

Only the later cars had the heated disc. There were two different types of TB's on the 318iS.

What methods have people be using to re-route the pipework? I have mine in pieces now and was going to use a short length of metal pipe instead of the heater plates, but it doesn't seem very elegant. Any recommendations/suggestions.
