Ok, im seriously tempted to buy a 2dr e30, something cheap like a 316 or something, strip it, cage it, change running gear, suspension etc but most importantly an m30 (christ i hope i got my engine codes right so i dont look an ass!), i know a few here as done a 335i jobby so i was wondering if..

a) this conversion would be any good for track action

b) what would be involved, is it a waste of time and will i actually have do some proper engine work, i say that because im a danger to myself and anything within a 5 mile radius with a spanner in my hand.

A mate brought up something intrested, weight on the front wheels, how bad would it be with the car striped?

You would be pushed to feel a differance between an M20 powered E30 and an M30 E30.

M50/M52 engine weights falls inbetween the M20 and M30 but will probobly work out to be more expensive to buy.

S50/S52 are heavier than the M30, more power but more $$$$

Thats most of the BMW 6 pots covered, if you feel front end weight is going to be an issue then you will have to look at a 4 pot like the S14 ?

What are your thoughts on a 325 turbo ?

Dont want turbo for track, coming into boost on a corner is not good, im seriously tempted by a 3.5, chaos's m535i sounds so sweet and pulls like a train.

anyways u know my opinion - 335 is a good thing
and ur welcome to use my new workshop to do the conversion

handeling isnt affected with a striped car, i drive one every day so i should know, goes round corners fast aswell

Thats the M30 for you.

If it's going to be a track car theres plenty of stuf you can do to reduce front end weight. It just depends on how far you want to go with it ?

Glass fiber bonnet held on with bonnet pins and lose the hinge mechanism
Move the washer bottle in to the car
Move the battery if needs be
lose the ABS pump if you feel you can do with out it
lose the head lamp wipers if fitted
lose the fog lamps if fitted
use an E32/4 coolant tank(which mounts on the bulk head so moves the wieght back a bit)
lose the power steering if you feel you can do with out it or use an electric power steering pump mounted towards the bulk head and remove the standard pump/brackets/pully and res'

i think you are also supposed to be able to lose some weight from the bumper/hanger ?

turbo is fine for track use, i might end up turboing the 335, i used to drive quite a powerfull nissan 200sx on track that came in hard at 4k rpm to the redline and it wasnt any trouble

It will have as much dieting as possible yea, 100% for track use so i dont bump the sport again, cheers for all this info lads its greatly appritiated!

I was going to do 2.7 if this came up as a bad idea but thank god it didnt as i like big, it makes up for smallness in other areas you see. winkeye

as i understand the m30 is fair bit heavier than the m20 and any extra weight over the front wheels is not what u want for track use. im not sayn they arent great to drive im sure the torque and handling would still be excellent. but if its goin in a track car ur gonna be tryn to loose weight in other places so the weight over the front will get even more uneven.

even weight distribution is the key to handling. handling is the key to a useful track car.

personally id go 4 pot M3 motor nicely worked m20 or a later m50 or m52 i think they have alloy blocks and heaps more go once u let the power out....

just my oppinion

If your going to buy and strip an E30 then you can still put in the M30. Why dont you put it further back in the bulkhead? This will shift the balance more in your favour.

Failing that then a tuned M20 2.5, but go SUPERCHARGER!! That way you wont have the issues you spoke about with the boost you get from a turbo conversion.

My pref is to go Supercharger...only because i want the whine!!!

Superchargers are expensive though, i want the cost as minimal as possible because i photograph track days more than take part so it's only going to be used every 2 or 3 months.

to be honest, i dont think you would notice the difference in weight between the M20 and M30. they're both iron block six pots.
and if you wanted to make the front lift up a bit, just push the loud pedal :lol:

ps, your bumper is here now.

We are building a striped out track E30 with the M30 conversion. Once you take out the Air-con, washer bottle, move battery to boot, put lighter seats in and take out the sound deadening (most is at the front) you are left still with a pretty balanced car. The M30 is such a strong well designed engine and can be made to really perform with the right mods. We are having our engine build to 330-350hp naturally aspirated. It will have a better power to wieight ratio than an E46 M3 CSL.

Its funny how you meet people. This guy came to a garage sale we were having, got talking and he turns out to be a BMW mechanic who specialises in high performance M30's. He gave us a lot of info and tips. He is going to build the engine. The track car is my brother in laws and I am helping him with some of the build. In short the engine is getting 10.2:1 pistons, Alpina style combustion chambers, special valve seat contour cuts, M style porting, 304 degree cam, 6 throttle body setup and custom 6 branch manifold.

Sounds a cool project, that cam will make my schrick 284/280 seem very tame.

What are you going to use for the TB's ?

You will have to do a bit of a write up on the engine build as it's being done, oh and take plenty of picies ! :)
