Dim instrument lights?
Moderator: martauto
I have noticed that the instrument backlighting on both my 316 and 318iS is pretty pants. Is this a general e30 thing???
If yes, what can be done to improve? Alot of my driving is done at night (I work engineering shifts on the underground and it a 100 mile round trip) and it would be nice to have something more than a orangey glow....
Any assistance greatly appreciated!

Hi Nick.
Good to see you made it at last
Dim lights could be down to just old, tired bulbs (how long have they been in there?) or may be one or two died behind the dash.
Only way to tell is change them. They're only a few pence each so it's not going to hurt to try.
PS. 10.30 ish tomorrow OK for you?

I don 't mean this to sound patronising, but are you aware of the dash light adjuster on the light pull switch?
Reason I say is on my first E30,i put up for a long time with dull dash lights until I discovered the adjuster switch!

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...
ha ha! Yes, found it straight away - I'd had a diet of Vauxhall for several years before beemer-dom and they have the same system!Jesus325iTouring wrote:I don 't mean this to sound patronising, but are you aware of the dash light adjuster on the light pull switch?

i'm suffering from dim lights too if not lack of
sometimes they come on straight away some times they take till the end of the road
with it adjusted to full
is it just a case of cleaning the connections?

318iS became MR2 Turbo became FTO GPX Mivec became Impreza became Rover 620Ti became Honda S2000 (current) became Fiesta 1.25 and 200SX Drift Slag (when the Honda has gone)

No it happened to both my 4 pot and the Citroen i had, 1st thing i did with them was turn the dash brightness up to full and they blew within a few weeks! I keep my dash lites quite dim now!

Ah, thats good advise mate!
1. Always let the turbo cool down (Ԛ£850 bill?)
2. Always dim the instrument lights (50p bill?)
;)

Every bit helps! Save the Ԛ£ for fuel rather than needless repairs!

Thank goodness for that snippet of advice! I'd thought I was going totally crazy trying to work out why sometimes the dash lights were dim and other times not (inadvertently twisting the light pull as I turned them on)!Jesus325iTouring wrote:I don 't mean this to sound patronising, but are you aware of the dash light adjuster on the light pull switch?
