Engine Painting/heat resistant paint?

Would you have to use heat resistant paint on the rockerbox cover and inlet manifold? il be using red oxide primer that has a high flash point anyway but ive bought all normal paint for the bits as the rocker box cover i have on now has been painted before and he only used normal paint with no troubles..

starting to wonder now as its taking me alot of time and i dont want it porking up cuz i didnt bother with heat resistant stuff..

Anyone done these jobs and used normal paint?

After a thorough prep just sprayed on VHT paint and baked it...did not use any primer(is the primer heat resistant ...)and had no trouble remember the rocker box is powder coated and will accept paint...VHT paint is only Ã‚£7.99 a can so what is the point of using anything else

Anyone else shed some light here...im doing the inlet mainfold too and peeps are saying use heat resistant paint..

Primer is red oxide, that primer can withstand more temp then normal paint but its not heat resistant..i got normal U-pol pro paint and got some laquer too..Did you use laquer?

this lot is taking me a long time as you know yerself..prepping is a nightmare especialy the inlet manifold..could of done it on the car but be a bit of a bodge job IMO,might aswell do it right..so i dont want it all going to waste if the paint starts peeling cuz of heat issues..thats why i asked

I used standard car paint on my old car and it was fine, it did start bobbling up a tiny bit in areas though after a year or so. This was sprayed directly onto the cover though with no primer.

Im planning to redo my cover this weekend, im using VHT wrinkle spray as i want to keep a OEM'ish look.

Someone told me that BBQ paint will do the trick, makes sense I suppose - they tend to get quite hot.

Well,id recommend Primer as its got a better heat resistance if you use red oxide..not only that it gives a smoother finish if yer prime it first..for the sake of an extra fiver and another 30 mins..make yer work look alot better..

not to sure what paint type yer using my i have used gloss on the rocker and il be using matt on the inlet manifold and will be using laquer on both to seal it

what did you use to get that yellow stuff and ground in oil off of your rocker and inlet?, i read a parafin/petrol mix is ideal.
Thinking of doing this my self, i take the inlet is a b@stard to remove?

its isnt that straight forward tbh,the bottom set of nuts are a biatch to get to..i used to extension pieces and a u-joint in the end to get to em...but after that its a doddle, make sure you know what pipes yer taking off and where they go etc..

as for the cleaning i used brake cleaner and wire brush,wire wool and various grades of wet n dry to finish it off before i keyed it up for the painting stages...

I started doing a bit on Sat night,then spent ALL sunday from 9-7 cleaning the bitch..make sure you got nothing planned

Is that anygood?

Before i put mine together im gunna take advantage and clean the block up a bit,after all its got 15yrs of old oil clinging to it, as i got the room to get in there now il go through the boredom of cleaning it..Gunk and all the crap dont seem to do the trick for me,need something a bit more potent but at the same time safe..

If thats anygood il give it a go.

Nitromors is paint stripper, i used it on my cam cover.

Apparantly CD2 is good stuff, not tried it personally. Ive used Gunk though and wasnt that impressed tbh. Brake cleaner is powerful stuff but i dont think a can would last that long

try getting some s**t coke like tesco value 12p i think that will do it, well so im told

when i done my cover on a 2lt 16v red top i cleaned it with thiners, rubbed it down with p240, then cleaned it with thiners again degrease it cleaned it with a tack rag to get the dust off, used etch primer, as that is a bare metal primer, then put the colour on if it needs it then i laquer it, but lots of colours dont need it so ask if you dont know,

it still looks good 2day but i scrached it putting the engine in lol,

Well got em back in,rocker cover and Inlet manifold..took me best part of today to clean the block while i was there and do a general tidy up before putting everything back together,i was starting to wish i hadnt bothered after a while but now i can see the finsihed product im glad i did..

Il do a lil bit more and get some photos up..

troulbe is now the bay looks sh*t conpared to the nice painted bits, still got alot of the yellow crap everywhere..and even with that off youve got faded white paintwork..but far too much work to get all that done,it looks better now,thats what matters

If your going to do this with the coke.. i suggest freezing a bottle of the stuff, then using the resultant syrup to strip the stuff. Freezing it, freezes the water, not the syrup (Denser than water, so freezes lower or sthing like that) Be careful though, It will fizz up when you open it!

Also good if you like mixing your coke with rum/bourbon/whiskey/vodka/tequila/Long Island Iced Tea... etc etc etc
