Hey everyone!

As the title says, i'm new here, and i gotta say i'm really impressed with the number of people here and all the posts - i'll be reading through this lot for hours and hours!

A bit about me... 30 years old, from Wiltshire, bought my first beemer 2 years ago, a 318iS and i am totally hooked on em  I haven't really done anything to the car in that time except drive it and get it through it's MOTs. Now however, i'm saving up to spend some wedge on my baby and thought i would check to see if i'm on the right tracks...

Pic first though :)

Image

This was just after i bought it, and the front valance and lip are now covered in stone chips :? i've fitted fog lamps, and the front of the bonnet is rusting quite badly where it's rolled under. I've also fitted the OBC from a 320e but the backlight is still dead and i haven't sorted that out yet. It had a bit of front end bending before i got it - the valance behind the front left wheel is bent inwards, and the bumper mount on the right is kinked up slightly meaning the bumper is uneven left to right and slopes down slightly towards the RHS wheel arch. Engine-wise she seems ok apart from a really nasty noise between 2700 and 3500rpm or so...

So, first off, the engine noise - i'm hoping that an M44 timing chain tensioner will stop that but wanted to check that's the right part for my car.

Once i have around £1000 spare to spend i'm planning on buying Bilstein Sports shocks and H&R 30mm lowering springs (the front shocks are completely gone already) - is the iS lower than normal already? ie. will it really be 30mm lower, or less than that? And will i need to adjust the camber at all? Also going to have the bends sorted out, the rust spots repaired (bonnet replaced probably as it's pretty bad), wheels (the original ones afaik) stripped and powder coated as they're in poor condition atm, and lastly paintwork touched up and machine polished. I'm hoping i can get all this done for not much over a grand - though all the work will be done by a place near Bristol, not by myself.

So what do you think? Worthwhile to upgrade the suspension and a decent choice of parts for this car? (bearing in mind i need new shocks anyway). And any info you'd care to offer 8)

Hopefully be getting all this done in the next couple of months so plenty of time to change my mind...

Welcome, another black 318iS :thumb:

Where about in Wiltshire you from?

Definitely change the timing chain tensioner, hopefully the guides & sprockets aren't too worn...

Thanks for the comments :)

I live in Trowbridge at the moment, but been in Bath and just south of Bristol also, and before that i lived near Reading.

I've been offered a set of Spax 30mm lowering springs for £50 - how do these compare to the H&R springs (apart from being much cheaper)? Bit of a beemer newb really so any advice gratefully recieved. (I really like the look of the cars that have both the front and rear tyres sitting just under the arches by the same amount (rather than the back almost dissappearing into the arch) - is that hard to get right?

Looking forward to coming to some of the meets nearby - the pics in the photo section look great :D

Welcome to the zone! Always good to see another 318iS :)

Personally I'd avoid the spax and save up for H&R springs/bilstien shocks

And fog lights?!! Extra weight! :gay:
Cheers,
Robin

Hi mate,welcome to the Zone!

Nice looking iS you have, looks just like mine did till a few months ago :)

Front fogs would make it look a bit better and a little lowering too.

Welcome to the zone matey, nice looking iS you have there.

To get the wheels sitting in the arches by the same amount I fitted an Eibach pro-kit spring kit which lowers by 30mm at the rear and 40mm at the front.

I'd personally get a set of 15" crosspokes to replace the 14" originals, they handle better and look better too.

My wife has an early e36 318iS and it's developed that camchain noise between 2500 and 3500 revs, I'm replacing the lot (camchain all the guides and tensioner etc) at a cost of £200 for genuine dealer parts.

Good luck with her :D

Cheers,

Welcome to the zone - good to have another IS owner joining in. Ref your bonnet, stick an ad in the wanted section for a colour matched item - I'm sure someone has one, they usually do!

Thanks for the advice on the springs Templ8!!

There slightly cheaper than the H&R springs, and the front seems to be adjustable between 30 and 40mm so i can get it just right :D

The car already has 15" cross spokes, hence why i'm going to get them refurbed rather than spending out on any others - i love the look of the cross-spokes, and while i'm prepared to make a few changes to the car i don't want to detract from the original look.... i'm a fan of really subtle body modifications that most people won't even notice unless there's a 100% original car sat next to it

Nice looking IS you have got there. I'm no expert when it comes to these chain engines I'm afraid, but it does sound like you are describing a worn chain / follower / tensioner.

Another zoner from wiltshire too, excellent. Have you only just found the zone then after 2 years, mind you this one has only been about a year or so.

Happy modding :D

I too developed death rattle at that speed... The above parts fixed it a treat. Change that before being tempted by suspension:

I've uprated the handling and razzed the life out of it and its making all sorts of other horrible noises now :D

Oh well, guess I'll have to go find some lunatic engine to stick in there.....Oh wait theres one in my outside toilet.
