They're part of the manifold gasket... so not all that much fun! :?
Good excuse to fit a 6-branch?!

£11.58 each from my $tealer... cheaper from GSF / ECP but neither of them stocked the studs...

Manifold off job to change, and it's odd on you will break a stud or two.
The shield is there to protect the ignition leads, but I've been running a M40 318 for three years now as a daily driver, without a trace of the shields being there, and no damage has occured yet.

Give the job a try...you might be suprised!

I put the job off on my touring for well over a year, when I eventually decided to tackle it, I wished I'd done it earlier, it was easy, didn't break any studs, and only took me about half an hour! Get new studs and nuts.

I helped my mate this weekend just gone replace his manifold, and i can tell you it took a lot longer than hlaf an hour! For a start some of the nuts you cant get a ring spanner or socket over as they are almost touching the exhaust header!! Mind you it was an Alpina 6 brancher so may be different for other various types of header.

Still not a particularly hard job, more time consuming.

gaz if your going to do this, DONT get the gasgate from E.C.P/GSF go to the main dealers,

the one's from BMW have a metal trim going round the edge, and the one from ecp/gsf dont, beleve me the metal trim is there for a reason, without it the edge of the heat sheild is sharp as fcuk and if your spanner slips you WILL end up with a gash in your finger mate.

The GSF gaskets are made by Elring who make the genuine gaskets so they have the metal edges. Can't speak for ECP though :?

Try this little engineering trick for rusty nuts, apply lots of penetrating oil for several days before the job then using a well fitting socket slightly tighten them first then undo them with care.

Yeah, I've had the GSF gaskets and they are fine, same as original.

Have seen the ones you mention though, they were on the breaker I bought, and don't look like they've lasted very long.
