just wondered if anyone had gone from 4 front head lights to 2? i went to motor world the other day and picked up a huge bass port for £2.99 is exacaly the same sixe as the hole in the front grill so i thought i would take the inside light out and replace it with the port and then put some ducting to my K&N.
i know you can do it on the MK11 golfs but i just wondered if anyone had done the convesion before????

Sorry for the slightly O/T but where can you get those bass ports and how big do they go ?
I want one 3 1/2 to 4 inches diameter to use as an inlet trumpet on an air filter box, a bit like this but bigger.

Andy i dont know if a bigger inlet trumpet will yield more power, it might actually loose you low end torque.

doubt it Andrew, its only the inlet to the airbox, the rest of the induction system will dictate air speed and therefore low end torque

you would be surprised how much low end torque you lose by pulling the little plastic trumpet out of a standard airboxJhonno wrote:doubt it Andrew, its only the inlet to the airbox, the rest of the induction system will dictate air speed and therefore low end torque

this is true Lee, my alpina only had a K&N so i put an airbox on, but it was missing the trumpet. I've got one now and it runs better, goes a bit better too and makes some induction noise!

Some back ground info..........
The trumpet in the picture is from a stock M30 air box, the trumpet at the narrowest point is about 50mm.The M30 TB is about 64-65mm so the trumpet is 15mm(ish) smaller and probobly wouldn't cause any form of restriction on a standard M30 with an AFM.
My engine doesn't have an AFM and it has the capacity to suck a bit more air in than standard as it has had the head ported and a schrick cam.
I'm hoping that the biggest restriction in the engine(apart from only having 2 valves per cylinder etc lol) releasing more power now is the standard 65mm TB.
I am eventually going to be fitting a twin 60mm TB from a Ford V8 and the standard M30 air box to my M30 to help it breathe better to squeeze some extra bhp out of it.
The Twin 60mm TB has the surface area equivelent(sp?) to a single 85mm TB so the stock trumpet on the air box is going to be to small so i want one 75-85mm.

The trupmet acts like a venturi to accelerate the air as it enters the chamber. You should see the F1/DTM inlet trumpets!Jhonno wrote:doubt it Andrew, its only the inlet to the airbox, the rest of the induction system will dictate air speed and therefore low end torque
I understand your theory Andy.

Andy,
do you need that inlet manifold milling flat for the t/b ?
If so you post it here and back and i 'll mill it for you.

one thing i noticed years ago when i was a kid racing karts was that when i went up from racing in what was called "junior brittain" now 100A I think, was that we were running a 25mm butterfly carb, instant snapping performance when you nailed it. with the right gearing at 3 sisters at Wigan we would see 100mph down the straight.
When i moved up into a class for age 16+ (100 National) you had a 40mm slide carb and there was just no bottom end.
The trick was to squeeze in the power rather than just stab it as that caused it to bog down. Took a bit of getting used to. Once it was up the revs and singing at 15000rpm upto max revs it really kept going.

Thanks a lot for the offer mate but i think i will only need to get it roughly flat because i'm going to get a spacer plate welded to the manifold then bolt the TB to the plate.buster wrote:Andy,

It needs a spacer plate because the throttle mech' on the TB will catch on the manifold.

Thats one of the problems with carbs, with fuel injection you can work around with the fueling to get it running right.E30BeemerLad wrote:one thing i noticed years ago when i was a kid racing karts was that when i went up from racing in what was called "junior brittain" now 100A I think, was that we were running a 25mm butterfly carb, instant snapping performance when you nailed it. with the right gearing at 3 sisters at Wigan we would see 100mph down the straight.

True, the alignement is not checked but i think they have to be there.
I will check the book tomorrow if nobody has answered by then
i think you would need different lights with the H4 bulbs, the golf's actually have these in the outer lamps and the inners are just spot's wired into the main beam so theres no mot issues with removing the inner lamps with these.
