Hi, I've just got a Viper Motorsport Chipped ECU from another gent on the Zone.

I've plugged it in and the car runs like a crock of s***, it seems to be running very very lean. Idles at about 500rpm, and hunts, doesnt seem to be very settled. On accelleration it is very flat, back fires, then goes, feels flatter than the normal ECU right through the rev range. On over run there is an occasional pop and bang.

Does the ECU need to learn it's new engine etc and things will come good after a few miles, or is there something fundamentally wrong here?

The ecu will take time to learn the new settings. I seem to remember someone saying something about taking it to the rev-limiter in third sorts it out, but i'd wait for confirmation on that one.

Unplug the ECU. Leave it for about an hour. Plug it back in, start the engine and just let it idle for 15mins (don't rev it at all). Then take it out on the (private) road and take it as far as it'll go in third. That should sort it. If it doesn't, contact seller or supplier for advice.

Ok, unplugged it, went and tinkered with the race car for a bit, came back plugged it in, let the car idle for 15mins then went for a run.

Idle is still dog rough, and a massive flat spot that improves around 3k, from 4k to 6.5k it pulls much better than the OEM chip, then my mechanical sympathy kicked back in and I backed off before finding the limiter.

Is this a case of "they all do that sir", has replacing the ECU highlighted an underlying problem that had been hiding in the background until now, or is there something wrong with the chip?

I'll keep it in there for a few days to see if matters improve, if not I'll revert back to the OEM setup. Has anyone got the contact details for Viper, I may contact them to see if they can offer any clues.

Iain

What ECU number did you have fitted 1st ?

is the second the same part number ( BOSCH) ??

chippeduk.com is the place for any aftersales, they produce and market the Viper range exclusivly.

I've just changed my ECU and it was idling rough. Ran it for 20 mins at idle, turned engine off, re-started and drove for 10 mins. Did the trick for me. (stopped hunting after about 15 mins idling)

Good luck getting anything out of chippedUk, they ripped me off!!

If you have any problems you can call me direct on 01527-579345 and ask for Enda.
If the engine is running as bad as you say it is likely the ecu number of software numbers do not match.

Ok, I'll check all the above. I don't think its time to rip chuncks out of the guys who made the chip just yet, we all make mistakes, thats why you get pencils with little erasers on the end.

I've bought it second hand in good faith, however it may be the wrong software etc etc or I may just of not given it enough time to settle in.

Thanks for the help.

KOS has a motive which is sad.
As the item was purchased second hand it is clear that the issue will be a difference in either hardware number or software number, its unfair for people like KOS to make slanderous remarks when Jay has proven himself more than any other BMW tuner and has clearly almost perfectly organised the business completely.

Ok, there are variations in the numbers on the outside of the ECU case, hopefully they mean more to you folks than me!!!

My car is an Fplate 318i btw

Original ECU...
Bosch sticker 0261 200 157
Bar Code Sticker
- big number 1727009002 810
- 941 16
- 26RT 2921
- 1520000505
BMW Sticker on the side
- WBAAF52080
- AB88421
- FO1E

New ECU...
Bosch sticker 0261 200 157 (i the same)
Bar Code Sticker
- big number 1721660002 078
- 752 02
- 26RT 247
- 0112000036
BMW Sticker on the side
- WBAAJ52040
- 3300938
- FO1E

What's the verdict, in compatible ECU's or just and ECU unfamiliar with its new engine. I've only gone for a quick blast up the road, only 3miles tops, may go for a jaunt later tonight, take the original ECU with me to pop back in if it really does become an issue.

This is a completely different software code although the car should still run ok with the new ecu fitted.
How certain are you that the item you have bought is in perfect condition ?
If you are uncertain of the origin then feel free to send it to me and I will check the DME for you.

Like I said, it was bought in good faith, and the car, I believe, was running fine until it was taken off the road to be broken.

I'll see how things go with some proper miles in the next day or so, and if all else fails yes, I'll prop the ECU in the post to be checked.

bollocks jason, i dont have a motive, its just that your work sucks, stop trying to punt your crap ecu viper chips to the unsuspecting victims who know nothing of your fuck ups, trying to muscle in on robs car, which doesnt need your "magical touch" and offering free re-maps to gain popularity after shafting many people along the way.
why you are willing to replace a second hand ecu/chip?? it was probably sold by the previous owner because it was crap. now if you didnt have a tarnished reputation you wouldnt get involved with this, but you kow you are wrong and made so many fuck ups with you "viper" chips you are trying to save a lost cause with e30 zone users

fuck off, unless you can give a chip or a re map for my IS which can produce th 24 hp you claim and then bet you MR2 sack off shit on it and buy your way out of a rolling road session which will proove that you CANNOT achive the claimed power gains and figures you claim you can ANYWHERE in the rev range .

You need to calm down, we wouldnt want you having an attack at the keyboard.
We are not trying to sell on this forum, there is very little work in chips these days and I am sure Ant will confirm this.
Remapping a car yields the same margain as chipping 5 e30`s.
We have tried to help this person who clearly stated the owner told him the car ran perfectly with the chip fitted and he has also stated that the software numbers dont match which is clearly the reason why the car doesnt run well.
Be carefull Kos, your taking your argument too far.

Your opinion is lies, no one has been conned as you suggest, I personally have offered to help a member out and you have turned this into a way to ruin a succesfull companies name.

His name was ruined due to his shocking postage of goods but never for the level of quality of items or that he intentionally ripped people off and he isnt threatening you, he offered advice.
