Is it like mayonaise on the oil cap....also check the dip stick or for oil in the expansion tank.
Symptoms of a blown head gasket = proper fcuked! Id estimate at a garage about £800....Its all labour costs!

I was quoted £400 by my local engine specialists when my Sport popped the head gasket.
I Thought sod that and drove to Scotland......It blew up on the way home!

Your cheapest option would probably be to put a new engine in it. You don't know what 'other' damage might have occured.
You could always strip the old engine after and rebuild/break for spares to keep the cost down.

Hopefully its just the gasket and it only takes a few hours to change.
You're safer getting the head pressure tested though when its off to make sure its not cracked.
9 times out of 10 with these engines its the head itself as I found out as well.

oil cooler is below the rad at the front of the car. 2 pipes off the oil filter housing lead to it. I doubt this is going to be your problem, especially as you have the dreaded MAYO!!

sounds 100% head or gasket
sadly the odds are in favour of head
but ya never know ya may be 1 of the lucky few
cost est at garage 400
but theres a few people on here that may quote you less
depending on who your near etc
dnt put same head back on without testing it

If you have got mayonase in the oil it is more than likely the head gasket.
Strip it down your self then get an engineering company to skim the head and the gasket aint much its self.
If you do it this way you can easily get it done for less than £100.

Absoloutly head gaskets rot so then does the cylinder head face, (Heads also crack so get it tested before skiming) The one handy thing about skiming these heads is you do not actualy need to remove cam / rockers etc just unclip and move rockers off valves.(But on the other hand, not a bad idea to reseat valves at this time) Removing exhaust manifold NIGHTMARE busted studs everywhere. Also budget for head bolts/cam belt (and preferably tensioner) all required gaskets, also fit new water pump while down this far.
