Ive got a 1991 325i sport with standard exhaust system. The exhaust is blowing like hell making hell of a noise so took it to a garage to get a price.

Its blowing just as it exits the first box. Anyway this garage is saying that they dont list this vehicles exhaust, and it doesnt match any of the diagrams in the book for the 325i E30. The only one which comes close to matching it is the Cat model but without the Cats.

I thought they were just being retards so took it to an exhaust specialist who said exactly the same and advised that all I can do is have it repaired for £90 or fit a s/s section which would be £280!!!!

What the fcuk is going on. Surely this cant be right can it? It wouldnt be cos its a 1991 when the cats became law but they werent fitted?

Oh, Im told its a 2 piece system

Help asap please

Thanks

Yup this one sounds familiar !
I got told this cat S**T too.
I am presuming yours is the same as mine, also late car.
Single twin pipe flange as opposed to the two flange type, two downpipes welded into the (CAT) Because this looks like a cat it dont mean it is. As I said I got this too, turned out was just a silencer. 2 years ago one of these ( aftermarket ) cost me £ 90 trade.
Dont like cats !
Dog person myself.

Had a bit of a flashback on this, part of the problem with this was that pictures in catalogs were wrong, showed two manifold flanges instead of one. The motor factors had to ring their supplier to check with a stocked item (Mine is also two piece system) Bosal make this part (as mine)but as stated PICTURES WRONG !

Good luck.

Thanks for your comments Gt6s, Im just going to get it repaired for the time being but will mention what you said to the garage about the pictures.

Seems a bit of a nightmare as no garage (apart from the specialist) will touch it and keep insisting its an import!

I always thought the 325's exhausts were all the same with the exception of the backbox on the sport model....wrong!

When it finally rusts away I'll put a full sebring on or something, rather than go through all this crap again!

Start saving my pennies, thanks again

When they say the cat model, what they mean is cat prepared, which later cars fitted with the 2 piece system are.

The purpose of the 2 piece system over the 3 piece was to prepare the car for the fitting of a cat when that option was ticked.

Just ask your exhaust fitter to order the non cat cat prepared system, or go to ECP who also supply the 2 piece centre box.
