I got shunted from the rear on Friday.
Does anybody with a bit of knowledge of bodywork repairs (and their costs) or insurance claims reckon the insurance company will repair this or will they write it off?

If it aint broke, it aint modified enough
insurance will prob write that off
but in reality it dosent look to bad and could be repaired quite cheaply
buy it back as part of the payout if the car overall is good condition and get the assss sorted

I'll look into buying it back. It would be a shame for it to be scrapped. But Im not too well off at the moment, so it will be a case of doing whatever is most economically viable.
Would it be a case of me saying to the insurance people "I'll offer you £X amount to buy it back off you"?

Yes. If they write it off it becomes their property, that they then have to dispose of, probably at a damaged car auction. They may want a quick turn around and might not want much for itminime1275 wrote: Would it be a case of me saying to the insurance people "I'll offer you £X amount to buy it back off you"?

To be honest, the car is (well, was) in very good nick but it holds no sentimental value to me. As long as I get a fair price from the insurance, I'll be happy, but it just seems a big shame and a waste of a decent E30 with plenty of life left in it.
Should I keep you guys posted incase any of you fancy a project? Somebody off here could get it sorted.

I've just added a few more pics, including a couple of inside the boot, to give a better idea of the damage.
So, do you guys agree that it looks like a write off?
Also, what sort of price should I try and get for it? Its in VGC, 126k miles. I payed £1100 for it in december and Id be very pissed off if they don't give me that if it is a write off.

I would say it's almost certain to be a write off, to the insurance companies, it's just a 17 year old BMW.
It looks an easy fix though, and won't in reality cost much to fix, the wings look un-touched, just a new rear panel, bumper, and lights, a little playing with the boot floor and it will be right again!

It's a couple hours work to sort most of that with a 10 ton body jack, but it'll be a write off.

i have just recently bought a 320ise on a g plate from a salvage auction with a small dent in the rear panel(even smaller now ive had a hammer and block of wood on it) and a chip out of the rear bumper. not too bad a car either.was written off and placed as a cat c
yours is a lot heavier so there is no doubt that they will total loss it but you might want to ask them to do a cash in lieu settlement.if they do that you could probably get someone to repair it for you and it might not go on the hit list either.
