Ok guys, im thinking ahead here -
Iv been offered a very good job after iv finished uni in a years time and im thinking about car options. Im trying to decide between 2
1: Sell my M3 and buy a 996 shape 911
2: Keep the M3 and do a 2.5 rebuild, full respray, new leather etc to make it like new.
Im pretty sure what the majority of people on here will say as its an e30 forum but i really want honest opinions, what would you actually do in the same position?
Also dont forget that we will still have the M3 race car for track days, so its only a road car i need

Cheers for the comments guys and gals, keep em coming
Sarah, the job would mean a fair bit of driving but i would use my little e36 for that anyway, i wouldnt want to put the miles on either a 911 or m3.
My thought process is this - I love my m3, its been my dream car since i was very young but its not a great road car, it needs to be driven hard to get the best out of it which is not always possible every day.
The M3 really comes alive on the track but we have the DTM M3 for that which is just in a different league, it can keep up with ANYTHING even in my inexperienced hands. Because of this i dont do many track days in the cecotto.
I think a 911 would be a better road car, the insurance is not much more and the extra money i would want to spend on the m3 if i kept it would be about the same as what id need to get the 911.
BUT, the M3 is very rare, i love having a car that is not the same as every other car on the road. Its also not going to loose me any money which a new car probably would and im sure if i sold it i would eventually want another one.
Iv got plenty of time to think about this but its great to have peoples input to help me decide

Forget a 996 - get a 993 turbo. It's a better car and more exclusive than a 996.

Simon13 - Im about 50/50, if it was a choice between buying an e30 M3 or a 911 there would be no probs, an M3 is a car everyone should one once in their life!
Elf - An e39 M5 was another car i was thinking of, awesome power but there big and heavy. Iv driven a 911, they are awesome cars!
Pete320i - Thats my main argument for keeping it, since iv owned it iv only ever seen 3 other M3's on the road. If i kept it the extra money would definately go on making the car as close to brand new as possible.
Taylor325i - I love the 993 turbo but insurance is £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£ and if i did get rid of the M3 id want a newer car thats under warrenty (im not good mechanically

I think your right pete, a replacement for the M3 would have to be something special. If i had a standard 911 i would get pissed off seeing loads of them about
Ideal replacement would be something faster than the m3, newish and a limited edition of some sort.
Only ones i can think of are the csl or the gt3 but both may be a bit pricey.
Check this out, this was the car that started me thinking, i took it for a drive when we went to pick up my mates new car -

Looks like a gt3, so not very common but still insurable

if you sell the m3 you will be back for another one....m3ben05 wrote:Ok guys, im thinking ahead here -

then the problem is that you will search and search looking for one that is as good as the one you have at mo
how do i know...ive done it
porsches
lotus/lotus carltons
cosworths
subarus
evos
skyline
it all depends what you want from the car but as well you know there is something very unique about the e30 m3.sure they have their shortfalls but they give a raw driver experience that iam yet to find elswhere
the above list has cost me..............well its scary
my advice is keep the m3 and save for something else aswell.
the m3 is money in the bank.
big money is needed to runbig money cars properly.finish uni.start your job and then see how the dough flows.
all i know is i went and owned what i craved for to find more than once is was back in the e30 fold looking for proper cars that are like hens teeth.
it is a big decision so take your time and make sure its the love of another car be it porsche or somat else and not just lust
lust can cost you very dear in the long run
just my thoughts
john

Very well put John, and it sounds like you are talking from experience there.
The main thing that worries me is that if i get rid of the M3 i will want another one at a time when they are getting very rare (and very expensive)
This may be a case of " grass is greener on the other side". I will need to explore the other options in more detail before i make any kind of firm choice.
Many thanks for all the comments btw guys, its really helped

For a while, I was umming and erring about skyline's. Even thinking about going to Japan to source one. As things turned out money was'nt what it should be and I've not got a skyline (Think I'm glad I haven't now). One piece of advice I was given was to drive one on a track day, see if you can get it out of your system. Our roads aren't great for thrashing supercars so it may ba little of a false economy buying one and not being able to fully "use" it.
If you still can't make your mind up - you sound really attached to the M3 - Surely, if your job is paying well enough for you to consider a Porker, wait another 12 months, earn the money you'd gain from selling the M3, then buy the porsche too. Have your cake and eat it.
Sounds like you may regret selling the bimmer.
