am i likely to see a significant improvement in handling from a set of lowering springs and tha addition of a strut brace or are these things more cosmetic?

Not just spring's mate but shock's aswell :thumb:
A strut brace does improve handling but you will mainly only see it when you go into corner's hard!
For better handling you should go for some new Anti-Roll Bar's or atleast some new ARB bushes, that help's alot :thumb:
Also, what size wheel's do you have on your motor?
I had 17"s on for a year and half and could'nt believe how much handling i had missed out on untill i put my 15" BBS's on  It's a big change and better accelleration

got 15" bbs' on at the moment so once planted the car handles well i just miss the turn in of my clio 182 so some mods that will help to improve initial steering response will help.

springs and shocks on egay for £150 but never heard of the manufacturer so maybe i should avoid?

To improve the steering response then you deffinately need to start at replacing the ARB bushes and link arm's! You'd be surprised at what a difference just this make's :thumb:

What's the name of the suspension on ebay?

I did'nt see a name for the shock's mate, just the name of the company but they look like standard bilstien shock's with lowered spring's. Good price but won't give you the desired effect you will be looking for as you are used to a light car. For decent suspension for an E30 you'll have to dig deep but it will last as long as the car is on the road.....H&R Cup kit. Alot of people craze about it on here so assume it's good? but i've just bought some second hand adjustable koni's and spring's on here for quite cheap and it was deffinately worth the wait :D
I had standard (New) Bilstien shock's all round and Jamex spring's. It was good but no good for drifting winkeye Had to go harder
