I don't know the M42 engine but when I did mine (M20) removing the bonnet made it much easier, you can see what your doing
Just make sure it dosen't get damaged

Never done one of these, but, IIRC there are a couple of threaded flanges on the pump where you are supposed to screw in a couple of bolts to force the pump out. If you just screw the bolts in and torque them up regardless, the alloy flanges will just break off, so take things steadily, use a rubber mallet, and gently rock the pump/ease it out, gradually keeping tension on the screws.318is_irl wrote:ok lads looks like the water pump on my m42 has had it.... ive located a new one(cheers bucks) and am going stripping out the old one tommorow. ive heard it can be a pain... any tips..

right i done the water pump today was an easy job... also done the alternator but im still in trouble... the car is still over heating but very slowly...tthe heaters inside are obly blowing cold air... there is no sign of oil and water mixture in the dipstick or the ol cap so i dont think its the headgasket....could it be the thermostat??

If the heater is blowing cold air it sounds like you may have an air lock (or a faulty heater valve) Did you follow the correct procedure for bleeding the system after changing the water pump?

turn the ignition on, turn the heaters onto red-hot setting, turn the fans on full and open all the vents....
then, remove the rad cap, and the bleed screw (plastic screw, about the size of a ten-pence peice, with a DELICATE cross-head!!)
once these are off, slowly keep topping up the coolant bottle. you will notice that it comes right up and then goes right down. carry out this procedure until the coolant starts pissing out little hole where the bleed screw is and theres no air left in the system. (the air comes out the bleed screw hole)
tighten up the screw, replace cap, and roberts your fathers brother, you're done...
run her and check she don't overheat... if she does, you've either done it wrong, or you might wanna check your head gasket!!!! (pants down time!!!)
