Valve clearance adjustment

I am little bit confuse about the valve clearance adjustment. According to the Benley's manual, the M20 engine need to adjust the valve clearance manually. But when the technican open the valve cover of my car's engine, he said the valve clearance would be adjusted automatically, like E36. He said maybe it is the latest version of m20 engine??
Mine is a 92' 325i cabrio, should be made at Dec of 92.

on the M20, valve adjustment is manual, via a small ecentric wheel on the end of the rocker finger thing. there is a write up on it in the tech section.
