I have both. The 320i feels smoother, and more leisurely. With a 325i throttle body, and chipped ECU, it's not slow at all. I'd have 320i smoothness, and sound over a 318i any day. Only the mpg lets it down over the 318i imo.

I have a 320 and everyone who gets in comments on how smooth it is. It really should only be sold in auto guise, but I have a manual.
Fast it isn't, economic it isn't, but I just don't like 4 pots.

got both (325+320), but the sound of the 320 once it finally hits 3k is worth the wait. it a cab its an auto its slower then the 325 but as quick as most modern cars, it easy to drive and smooooooooth as you like!
nought wrong with em mate.

i have a 320i with a 325i muffler among other things. i think it sounds crap. im hoping itll sound better when it gets the 2.7 bottom end and the cat goes.
oh yeah as for your question i say 320i is a good starting point if your willing to do the work to get it over 200hp. BUT if you wanted it as a standard car go the 318i or IS even better. they are a totally different car to drive the ligther front end and faster rack on the older models give it a fantastic ability to flick into a corner. with a great deal less understeer.
after driving a 318i for a week then gettin back into the 320i i felt it was very boring.
of course a nicely modified 325i is another world better than both.

thanks guys for all comments, i like the six pot sound great, but i have not driven 318i so i can not compare, any way mine is smooth and i love it. i think 325i is next on the list, but will still keep 320i as it is still all origanal and low miles,. thanks peter.
