Hi ive got a 316 (Carb model) when you start it it ticks over at hight revs, not sure how many as rev counter is broken, but before all this happened it was hunting and some times after being driven, it was hunting worse than when you first started it.

does Any one no whats wrong i think it might be an air leak but not sure?????.

I had a similar problem with my 316 carb, turned out that this hunting is a common problem with the Pierbourg carburettor, you can do a webber conversion! I never bothered, I ran my 316 with a hunting idle for about 4 years!

I just picked up an 89 316 with a similar issue. It only shows 1/4 warm after driving, but the ol' girl always gives me a heavy hesitation (sometimes to a stall) when I press the gas unless I'm REAL slow with the acceleration.

My 318i hunts also. And my temp never goes above a quarter either! I tried a new idle control valve, but it didnt fix it. BMW looked it over and found an air leak, but it didnt fix it! So now Theo is selling me a new air flow meter, and fingers crossed.. :) I will let you know if this sorts it.

Hi, sorry no i dont, they can pop up in a number of places really. I have been told by Dan that his car idle hunted also, showing the symptoms of our cars. He fitted a new air flow meter and it sorted it out. This is what i am going to try this weekend. I will let you know if it sorts it out. 8)

If it sorts mine, then i recomend you get one, no reason to buy one now if it isnt the problem 8) . Try ebay, although they always seem to be 325i ones on there?! Also just email somebody breaking a car with your engine in it. :thumb:

If you have a carburettor you don't have an air flow meter.

Have you tried a new air filter ?
If not just take it out for now and see if it improves the idle.

Does the temp guage work the same as the old one ?
I'm not too sure you can swap them.

As for the idle problem the best you can do is pull all the electrical connectors off the carb and check the terminals for corrosion and make sure all the vacuum hoses are clear, pay perticular attention to the auto choke and temp sensor ones.

What happens if you run it with the air filter cover off and hold the choke flap open ?

well ive swaped them and every thing works fine temp gauge mph, and so on, i tryed with air filter cover off and it makes no difference, i have not touched the choke flap????

could it possibly be the carb as i might go to scrap yard and get a e21 316 carb and try that as theres a e21 316 with 40,000 on the clock so carb should be good.
