:( it looks like the button it sticking in, moves very slowly and the ratchet bit of the handbrake does not engage

Managed to pull the hard plastic cover off so i can pull the button out a bit but it aint great!

Any clues as to what to do

I've never heard of anyone else doing it, but my wife has twice managed to break the handbrake lever on her touring.
She tends to pull it sideways as well as up, and eventually it breaks on one side.
Sounds like this might have happened to yours.
Take the rear console off (10mm plastic nut under rear ashtray) and have a look.

I have indeed broke my handbrake :o :o :o

Roughly in line with where you little finger lines up on the handbrake there is a 1/2 inch verticle crack running from the bottom of the lever up :(

Made the lever sit at a slight angle, hence the button sticking

Saturday with be welding day then!

Cheers Bri, tell your wife she's not the only one!!

Sorted 8)

Welded the cracked side, did the other too as there was the start of another fracture and bridged the area across the base on both sides to strengthen it up a touch - hopefully it'll be ok :)
