I'm having a complete mare trying to fit a new water pump. I've removed the old one with no problem. Is there a secret to getting the new pump back on with the gasket lined up correctly with the bolt holes whilst pushing against the cam belt tensioner spring?? I thought I had got it and fitted everything back together to only have water trickling out from between the pump and block.. and yes I did clean both surfaces before fitting.

I've now stripped it out again and the gasket had slipped and is useless, is there an alternative way of sealing it ie gasket paste??

Cheers guys any help on this one much appreciated before I pull all my hair out :cheese: :cens: :cheese:

Personally i would use the proper gasket but with a couple of small patches of silicone sealant to hold the gasket in place untill its bolted down 8)

I am going to get another 'proper' gasket but like your idea of using a little silicone sealant to hold it in place :thumb:
So I take it using just gasket paste is a big no, no?

Just using gasket goo is definately a no-no in this particular case.

Try getting hold of some 'HYLOMAR' from your local parts place.

Originally developed by Rolls Royce for metal to metal joints on aircraft engines.
A thin smear of it on the gasket face will hold it place on the block AND help the sealing.

So 'HYLOMAR' on it's own without a gasket would work? sounds like something everyone should have in their garage/shed winkeye

Do you mean this stuff http://www.hylomar.co.uk/universalblue.htm

Thats the stuff, but don't fall into the trap of thinking it's some sort of miracle cure for leaks.
It was developed for mating surfaces that have extremely close tolerances.
The production tolerances on a car engine are just too wide to use this stuff on it's own, so just stick to a thin smear on your gaskets.
