Hi,

Just out of interest how many people feel that running 17" wheels looses handeling, and can feel dangerous? My wheels (look like fox alloys im told  ) seem to 'ride up' ridges in the road. I want ot loose this fell so am going to get some 15"bbs. Who else finds that 17" wheels get 'draggeg' into imperfectiosn in the road more easily?!

I go on about this constantly - 17 is an inch too far, but a great deal depends on the rubber
Not only are 15s a good size for handling, but genuine BBS weigh so little, and are very strong. Shame they take so much cleaning :D

17's for look's
15's for driving :drive:

I really liked my 17's and put up with them for 1yr 1/2, polished with a lip. But now i've come to my sense's and got some BBS's, refurbed them and stuck them on :D
I could'nt believe how much i've mist out on the handling of my car
Everyone was alway's saying how good at holding the road the E30 is but i could never have the same comment with the 17's on, now i will never go back, and it has a better stance now

17's are not to blame in isolation for the altered handling characteristics as just sticking 17's on an E30 looks wank, so most people either lower the car first or at the time of sticking the alloys on.

with 17"+ alloys you have rubber band tyres, which give a more coarse ride quality as they have stiffer sidewalls so less absorbtion of ride. The harder sidewalls which have less lateral give also make for sharp feeling steering to a degree. However the consequences of the low profile rubber means you get little warning when it's about to break loose.

Because of the larger wheels and lowered suspension this adds to tramlining and the car gets fidgety on roads with a poor surface and the car sometimes wants to follow in the grooves of the road. Lowering will also enhance any poor steering/suspension components such as worn bushes and joints, which will aggravate any unruly behavior

The offset of your wheels may not also be correct for your car, also causing tramlining if the width of the track is increased

get it lowered a sensible amount with some nice 15's and it will be smart as a dart.

17's just look cool :D

15" bbs and lowered suspension can't beat it for handling, but 17's definately for looks

Thanks, this has made interesting reading.

I really want to get some 15" bbs on it, but havent found any yet. My wheels are a bit council, and as i havent lowered my car they look a bit crap in a way! I think i will miss them though, but i need bbs. This probably isnt the right thread to say once again, anybody want to swap winkeye !

All down to the size of tyre, I mean look at cars with 17" and bigger as standard rims, they hardly effect the final quality of the ride do they?

Granted, not the best wheel for the e30 though, but still, given the correct tyre all will be well.

I personally dont like 17's to drive with. O.K they can look nice but the ride is a million times better on 15's! Its what the car was meant to be rolling on!lol. Found that 17's make the steering lighter, make you tramline and generally f**k up the ride.

Paul

Glad you've seen the light. 15 in BBS are the way to go.

That said, I am sticking on 16inch Alpinas this week with a -60/-40 drop.

I can't offer my BBS alloys to you as they are my spare set. You'll find some easily (put a post up in the wanted section), try and get a set that don't need a refurb as that's another £200.

Thanks Guys, glad im notr the only one finding this problem. I have just spent 1300 on my gar on garage bills, mainly on steering parts and all the bushes and bearings etc replaced, so i dont want to leave on 17" wheels, as they are the only thing holding my handeling back in a big way now.

Mamood, sure you dont want to sell them winkeye .

To be honest its not worth spending money on my wheels. I dont like them much now because they are a bit 'flash/obvious'. I think i wil go for the 15" bbs, and if i dont like them i will shov my 17"'s back on!

Thanks.

well never driven mine with 15's so cant really comment, there just too small for me looks wise anyway. I've driven with 17's and havent had a huge problem and handling been good to me so far.
