right yeah, its the obc, used to calling it trip computer, came with my 325ise as standard, 13 button one, orginal had cracked display so just swapped for new unit. assumed as it was like for like would just switch on and magically display all its secrets but it hasn't, just has power and backlight?

if the new one actually works, you should be able simply to swop it in - if it has a different white plug in the back, it will still work, but your MPG will be out
when you say it has backlight, do you mean on the buttons?
shine a torch onto the display - what can you see now?

cheers people, all buttons & display light up just no readins etc..
the old white chip says '39 typ', not sure what the new one says, gotta take it back out.. gives me something to start withthough
another thing, is there one of those switches/dial thingys that dims or brightens the lights on the dash?, fondled the dash a number of times but kind find anything! mind you alot of my trim and panels are missing from the steering column so please don't say its in that area!
