So I got a second opinion on my car (rough running, hesitation, overfuelling etc.) from another garage. This guy just did a fault code chekc and a visual inspection of the engine.

He says:

1. Oil leak at front of engine under manifold, early signs on of possible HG failure (?)

2. ECU fault code 01 - something definitely amok with the ECU (?)

3. Loose rockers, although he's not inclined to tighten them up as the engine isn't far out of tune (?)

He thinks a remap / new ECU could sort most of the problem, he says that the engine sounds nice (sounds a bit rough / chuntery to me like its on a lumpy cam, with v. pronounced ticking when warm, possible blowing exhaust / manifold / gasket).

Any opinions / suggestions?

I've got no clue. I don't have a bottomless budget as I'm prepping for an S50 conversion. However, it would be nice to be able to enjoy my car when I get the chance to drive it (I walk to work).

A new ECU seems like an expensive option. Having said that, the car only has 110k and the engine should be good for at least another 75-100k (it has FSH). I'd like to keep it handy after the conversion in case I want to revert to standard. Or sell it on.

Right now, I'm just fed up. Its starts. It runs . But its obviously not at full strength, drinks like Oliver Reed and just doesn't sound as nice as it should.

I'd really like to enjoy a healthy, stock sport. But I'm leaning towards chucking something else in there sooner rather than later just so I can drive it within feeling like a farmer.

The sport models use the same ECU as the standard 325i models, the original bosch number on the front label will be 0 261 200 173 assuming it's a manual.

The facelift 320i uses the same basic unit with a different chip. There are usually a few of these on ebay. If you get one of these with bosch number 0 261 200 172 then unclip the top cover there will be a chip under a plastic clip, swap the chip from your ECU into this one and away you go.
