Hi,
I've been offered an S14 engine to transplant into my 318is. Does anyone know *for sure* if the S14 engine will mate up to the 318is gearbox OK?
I guess lots there could be lots of of things that could cause problems..
If you've done this before, pls let me know!
cheers..

It is possible, you need a 525e manual bellhousing & a 265 box, it bolts up
it could will eb either 5 or 10 degres out.

A friend in the states put a m42 in to his e21 and used the org m10 box, cnc'd up an adaptor plate, won't do it again.

Easy option is s14 engine & box & cross member. (any m10/30 box will fit)

Jason, sounds like some good info but a bit confused, chap wants an S14 on the m42 gearbox, are you talking about mating a 265 box to an m42 using 525e bellhousing?
if you are, i'm pretty interested, would love a dogleg box on my 2.1.
of course i'd need a new diff (mb prop too?), but small price to pay i reckon.
can you explain some more. cheers

Yes

I got it back to front, m42 to 265 box.

Basicaly in the USA and Euro the manual 525e which was the 2.7 m20 came with the 265/260 type box, every UK one I have seen was automatic.

I got a bellhousing from the USA to do this in my e21, and as the m50/m20 bellhousing fit i gussed you could do this onto a m42.

I got a 318is 3 weeks ago, 2 weeks in and the head gasket went so i thinking of a m42 performace rebuild. I guess you are offset grinding the crank to get up to 2.1l, also how does the m47 conversion work.

lol i still don't get it! right, from the beginning. m42 has getrag 240 gearbox. so m20/m50 boxes don't mate up? or do? i don't know anyway.
then s14 265 boxes don't mate to an m20, is that right?
actually i clearly don't know what i'm talking about, so i'll stop there, fancy clearing it all up for me?
i know the m42 sits further back in the engine bay than the s14. just thought i'd throw that out there!

my crank's not offset ground, i'm using oversize pistons. you can use the m47 crank, but it needs work to fit.

Hi

To get a 265 to an m20 you need the 525e manual bellhousing,

If the m42 & m5** share the same bellhousing pattern then ypu can fit the 265 to the m42 but the box ill be rotated slightly due to the differenc in mounting angle of the engines, this means you need to modify the gear linkage.

I thought E30 bellhousings & 'box were a one piece casting? or is the 265 'box different? Just out of interest.

This is true for all the Boxes except the ones fitted to the E30 M3/M5
